CSUB Closes Out WAC Championships

D'Arcy Wins Again, Rogic Sets Two More School Records, 'Runners Win Last WAC Relay

Houston, Tex. – Sophomore Autumn D'Arcy won two more WAC Titles and junior Kris Rogic set a pair of school records as the CSU Bakersfield swimming and diving teams wrapped up the 2020 Conference Championship meet at the CRWC Natatorium in Houston.

"It was another excellent day to close out an excellent meet," said CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen. "We dealt with tough situations all weekend and we came up big with great swims from everyone on the roster. We won some races, broke a lot of records and had a great time together."

Rogic set school record in the 200 Back and the 100 Free. He bettered the existing school record in the 200 Back by 1.30 seconds when he posted a 1:43.84 in his signature stroke to finish fifth and earn a Second-Team All-Conference nod.

Rogic added his sixth school record swim of the weekend, when he led off the 400 Free Relay with a 100 split of 43.90. He is the first CSUB swimmer to crack the 44.00 second barrier in the event.

D'Arcy dominated the field in the 200 Fly. She led by more than half a body length after the first 25 yards and a full body length after 75 ensuring the outcome was never in doubt. It was her third WAC title of the weekend, after claiming championships in the 200 IM and the 100 Fly earlier in the week.

She added a fourth title when she anchored the women's 400 Free Relay to a conference championship in CSUB's final race as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. The `Runner relay team finished in a time of 3:21.02, the second fastest time in school history.

Mikayla Popham led off the relay with a personal best time of 49.54 in the 100 Free, breaking her own standard which she had set earlier in the day. Ellice Richman and Maddie Cosgrove swam the middle legs in CSUB's first-place 400 Free Relay.

In the individual 100 Free, Popham raced a 49.64 to finish second to earn her third First-Team All-WAC award of the weekend. The Sunshine Coast, Australia native was just out touched at the wall, missing her third conference championship by 0.40 seconds.

The Men's 400 Free Relay also closed out the meet with the second-best mark in school history. Rogic, Ryan Brimer, Loren Gillilan and Noah Hickman combined to swim a 2:57.96 and finish fifth.

Freshman Lindsey Sohoel-Smith cracked a Bakersfield Top-5 for the second time this week when she clocked a 2:19.53 to take over the #4 spot in the 200 Breaststroke.

Lucy Peltz and Ariane Skeggs gave the `Runners top-10 finishes in the 1650 Free, placing sixth and ninth, respectively. Peltz posted a 17:14.07 to set a personal best, while Skeggs' time of 17:25.01 was the second fastest of her career.

Noah Hulter scored for Bakersfield in the men's 1650 with a 15th-place finish in a time of 15:51.88.

Alyssa Madero and Tabea Mose each posted scoring finishes in the 200 Back. Madero easily posted her fastest time of the season to finish 15th in 2:03.99, while Mose shaved 0.70 seconds off of her personal best to finish 16th with a time of 2:04.08.

Richman had a big day for CSUB, adding a 10th-place finish in the 100 Free to her leg on Bakersfield's first-place 400 Free Relay. Richman's 100 Free time of 51.30 was a personal best by more than a full second.

Brimer added a personal best of 44.37 in the 100 Free to finish 12th in the event.

Maddie Cosgrove earned a First-Team All-WAC nod in the 200 Fly, placing third to give Bakersfield two spots on the podium in the event. Cosgrove earned a First-Team All-WAC nod for her efforts, and collected a personal best time of 2:01.21 in her bread and butter discipline.

Loren Gillilan and Adrian Paseta finished 9th and 10th in the men's 200 Fly, with times of 1:49.07 and 1:49.28, respectively.

The Roadrunner men finished in sixth place with a total score of 341.5, while the women were 5th with 434 points.

Individually, CSUB racked up six WAC Titles, nine First-Team All-Conference award winners, 14 Second-Team All-League performances and 10 school records over the four-day conference championship meet.

The Bakersfield swimmers will be back in action in two weeks when qualifying student-athletes will head to Cleveland for the National Invitational Championships beginning on Mar. 11.
