Swim Teams Host USCD, Loyola Marymount

Bakersfield, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield men's and women's swimming and diving teams are both in action this weekend when they host teams from UC San Diego and Loyola Marymount at the John S. Hillman Aquatic Center on Jan. 4, beginning at noon. The men return to competition for the first time in over a month when they face UCSD in a head-to-head dual meet. Meanwhile, the women's team will swim for the second time in four days when they host UCSD and Loyola in a tri-meet format.

"This will be a competitive meet for both our men and women," said CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen. "We're going to have to be fast and we'll need everyone on their A game."

The Roadrunner men will swim as a team for the first time since competing at the Pepperdine Invitational in November.

"The men have been working hard in training camp," Hansen explained. "They've stayed in great condition and they'll be ready to go tomorrow. They're excited to be back in the pool and for the chance to compete against a good UCSD team."

A handful of male student-athletes did compete at the Toyota US Open in December, including Kris Rogic, Loren Gillilan and Ryan Brimer.

Rogic finished 18th in the 100 Backstroke at the prestigious event, while also swimming the 200 Back and the 200 IM. He has a pair of wins in dual meet competition this year, grabbing the 100 Back title at UNLV and the 200 Back in a tri-meet against California Baptist and Pomona-Pitzer.

Gillilan leads the `Runner men with five individual dual victories this season. He won both the 100 and 200 butterfly events at UNLV and grabbed three titles in the team's tri-meet, including both butterfly events and the 200 IM in a personal best time of 1:52.26.

Brimer, a junior, was swimming fast heading into the holiday break. He won both the 100 and 200 freestyle events in the team's meet with CBU and PPU.

The `Runner swimmers expect strong support from their diving counterparts. CSUB's male divers have delivered ten podium finishes this season, led by Sam Stinson's six.

Stinson has set personal bests in both diving disciplines this season. He captured the 3 meter event at the California Baptist Diving Invitational with a score of 329.95 before scoring a career-high 288.05 in the 1 meter competition at the CBU/PPU tri-meet.

On the women's side, Autumn D'Arcy and Lindsey Sohoel-Smith are expected back in the pool for the Roadrunners after missing the previous meet due to illness.

D'Arcy has anchored the CSUB line-up for much of the season, winning 15 individual races in the first half. She's dominated the 50 Free, the 100 Free and the 100 Fly for Bakersfield, touching the wall first in 13 out of her 14 entries in those disciplines.

Sohoel-Smith took first place with a 1:07.47 in the 100 Breaststroke event against UNLV in the team's season opening dual meet. She is also an integral part of the team's 200 IM Relay.

The duo joins Maddie Cosgrove, Jayssie Haynes, Tabea Mose and Mikayla Popham who combined for six victories against San Jose State on New Year's Eve.

Popham switched up her normal load and didn't miss a beat, taking home titles in both the 500 and 1000 Freestyles. Her 1000 Free was especially impressive when she lapped the field by more than fourteen seconds on her way to victory.

Haynes also collected a pair of wins against San Jose State. She finished first in the 200 Breaststroke for the second time this season and added a first-place finish in the 200 Free. Cosgrove won the 200 Fly in 2:07.01 while Mose nailed down the 100 Back in a time of 58.84.

"It's great to be back at full strength," said Hansen. "But success for us as a team depends on getting good performances up and down the line-up. We need to do more than just win races, we need to grab points whenever we can."

The `Runners are in a good position to get support from freshman Ariane Skeggs. Skeggs posted a pair of second place finishes in the meet versus San Jose State, finishing behind only her teammate Popham in both the 500 and 1000 Freestyles.

Maya Valdoria was second in the 200 Fly against the Spartans and gives Bakersfield another prime scoring option.

In the diving well sophomore Lauren Carson has three second-place finishes in the team's last two dual meets.

Action kicks off on the CSU Bakersfield campus at 12 noon with the two meets alternating events.
