CSUB Statement on Aquatic Center

Roadrunner Aquatics, an independent swimming club that had contracted with CSU Bakersfield to use the John S. Hillman Memorial Aquatic Center, informed its members on June 30 that its contract with the university had ended and canceled all practice sessions at CSUB for the remainder of the current competitive season.

Understandably, the announcement was disappointing for club members. To provide additional context, CSUB would like to clarify the status of its agreement with Roadrunner Aquatics and propose a path forward.

In May of this year, the university offered to extend the existing contract and rental rate with Roadrunner Aquatics through the end of the season in August to prevent any disruption to club members. Roadrunner Aquatics initially accepted that proposal but later informed the university that it had decided not to proceed.

As Kern County's University, CSUB recognizes the important role public aquatic facilities play in our community. The university remains willing to continue the current agreement through the end of the competitive season so that Roadrunner Aquatics members can resume using the aquatic center without interruption while longer-term arrangements are considered. The university welcomes continued dialogue to determine whether a mutually workable path forward can be identified.
