`Runners Take Three Titles at California Collegiate



Bakersfield, Calif. – Sixteen CSU Bakersfield wrestlers competed at the 43rd Annual California Collegiate Open hosted by San Francisco State on Jan. 25. Ten different Roadrunners won at least three bouts, while Kalani Tonge, Mark Cardwell and Jacob Sieder wrestled to tournament championships in the 157 lb, 197 lb and 285-pound weight classes, respectively.  
 
"The California Collegiate is a great opportunity for guys to compete," said CSUB Assistant Coach Luke Smith. "We were able to get some matches in and the team performed very well."
 
Tonge finished a perfect 4-0 to take the title at 157 lbs and improve to 13-1 on the season. His title run included a pair of victories over wrestlers from Pac-12 rival Stanford, including a 3-1 decision over Ethan Woods in the championship bout. Tonge also won the 157 lb title at the Menlo Open earlier this year.
 
"Kalani is a tough kid," said Smith. "He just battles. He's had great success this year because he works hard and competes at such a high level."
 
Cardwell captured the first tournament title of his career when he shutout California Baptist in the 197 lb final. He was dominant on the day posting a pair of shutouts, including a major decision victory, and pinning two opponents.
 
"Mark has a lot of potential and he showcased that today," Smith noted. "We're really excited about his promise as a Roadrunner."
 
In the Heavyweight division the `Runners finished 1-2-3. Sieder took the bracket championship when he bested teammate Brayden Ray in the final by a 10-2 margin. In the semifinal he knocked off another Bakersfield foe when he got the better of Mike Ruiz. Sieder posted five victories in his tournament run, including four pins, all of which came in the first period.
 
"It is great to see Jacob Sieder rounding back into form," Smith added. "He has faced a tough recovery from last season's injury, but he is really starting to look like his old self. He was outstanding this weekend."
 
Redshirt freshman Brayden Ray finished second in the 285 lb division posting three wins before falling to Sieder in the final. All three of Ray's wins came by decision.
 
Redshirt senior Dominic Balmer placed third among the heavyweights winning five matches overall. Balmer's day included a pin of San Francisco State's Justin Ramos, a major decision victory and two opponents forced to abandon matches due to injury.
 
Josh Brown wrestled to a second-place finish in the 149 lb weight class. Brown knocked off a pair of Menlo opponents, including a 20-5 tech fall win over Sebastian Marin in his opening match. He defeated San Francisco State's Mason Boutain to reach the finals, before falling to Stanford's Jaden Abas, 8-2.
 
Josh Annis was second at 174 lbs. Annis grabbed three wins on the day, including a pair by fall. His pin of Western Washington's Nate Carnicle came just 0:35 into his opening round match.
 
Noah Blakley-Beanes (141 lbs) and Brock Rogers (157 lbs) each finished 4-2 in their brackets to earn fifth-place finishes. Blakley-Beanes posted two pins and a tech fall among his four victories. All six of Rogers' bouts were decisions, with two of his wins coming in extra time.
 
Brian Horn picked up three wins of his own to place 6th at 174 lbs. Horn pinned his first opponent, Easton Howe of Simpson in just 1:41. He added wins over Fabian Miranda Walls of Southern Oregon and California Baptist's Louis Rojas.
 
Eddie Flores (125 lbs), Jacob Peralta (141 lbs), Andrew Bloemhof (141 lbs), Bradley Harper (165 lbs) and Ruiz (285 lbs) each posted two victories for the tournament.
