Roadrunners Can’t Complete Comeback at USF

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team got a quality start from junior right-hander Ethan Skuija, but it wasn't enough as the University of San Francisco scored two runs in the seventh to reclaim a late lead and win 3-2 at Benedetti Diamond.

Skuija didn't receive a decision after throwing six innings and striking out eight batters.  The big right hander allowed just one earned run on the day.  He walked the first batter of the seventh inning before being relieved by freshman Roman Angelo (0-1).

Angelo allowed a single and a walk to load the bases with CSUB still clinging to a 2-1 advantage.  Kevin Altamirano was next in line for the visitors and he gave up a single to his first batter to tie the game at 2-2.  An error on the following play allowed the winning run to cross home plate, before the sophomore struck out a batter and got a 4-6-3 double play to prevent further damage.

CSUB (2-5) threatened in the eighth.  Tyler Jorgensen led off the inning with a walk and Ryan Koch followed with a base hit, but San Francisco got three straight strikeouts to end the threat.  Eric Charles kept the game alive in the ninth with his first career hit, but the `Runners couldn't capitalize and Alex Pham earned his first save of the year.

Trailing 1-0, the Roadrunners did all of their damage in the sixth.  Nick Grossman led off the inning with a walk and Koch blasted a double down the left field line to score him off of the eventual winning pitcher Julian Washburn (2-0).  The senior moved to third on a groundout and came around to score on a single by Cole Valletta

Koch had two hits, a RBI and a run scored on the afternoon to lead the offense and Grossman was on base twice from his leadoff spot.

The `Runners will look to salvage the final game of the series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
