Late Innings Doom `Runners Against Dons

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team was trailing just 1-0 after the first five innings on Sunday afternoon, but the University of San Francisco blew open a tight ballgame with five runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to win 12-1 and sweep the series.

Starter Edgar Barclay (1-1) allowed just one run through five innings of work and struck out eight batters before running into trouble in the sixth.  He left the inning after allowing a pair of singles and getting a flyout to right field.  Kyle King came on in relief and allowed a single to his only batter to make the score 2-0.  Andrew Ciandro was next in line for CSUB.  The sophomore gave up a double and back-to-back walks and left with the score at 4-0.  Kenny Johnson finally got out of the inning, but not before the Dons scored two more runs on a single and a sacrifice fly.

The seventh was no better for the Roadrunners as the Dons scored four times on just one hit.  CSUB hit two batters and issued four free passes in the inning.  In total, CSUB used nine relievers to get the final eight outs.

CSUB finally got on the scoreboard in the eighth.  Ryan Koch started the inning with a double, moved to third on a groundout by Jesse Rowley and came around to score on a groundout by Nick Grossman

Senior Jake Ortega was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and was hit by a pitch to lead the offense.  Koch also had a pair of hits and a run scored for CSUB.

The `Runners (2-6) will be back in action on Tuesday when they head to Cal Poly for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.
