CSUB Sweeps Pair to Start Season

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – It was all smiles at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center on Friday as the CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team started off its season with 5-0 sweeps of Irvine Valley College and Gavilan College. 
 
"I'm very happy with the way we played," said CSUB Head Coach Cesar Benatti.  "We did this first day with the junior colleges to get rid of some of our nerves to start the year.  We executed a lot of things that we have been working on in practice.  I'm happy with the result."

The Roadrunners didn't drop a set in their second match on Friday.  Sidney Wicks and Hana Makonova put forth a dominating effort at the No. 3 position, winning by matching 21-8 scores.  CSUB's second pair, Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat, also ended a perfect afternoon with a 21-9, 21-19 sweep. 
 
Ally Barber and Rafa Bonafacio put CSUB up 1-0 as they had no troubles at No. 4, winning 21-12, 21-13.  Brooke Boiseau and Krista Hernandez also came away victorious with a 21-11, 21-10 sweep.  Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner finished the 5-0 sweep with a 21-15, 21-11 win at the top spot.

In their season opener, the Roadrunners dropped just two sets against the Lasers of Irvine Valley.  Debuting five new starting pairs to begin the season, Ally Barber and Rafa Bonifacio got CSUB on the scoreboard with a 21-6, 21-8 victory at the No. 4 position.  It took a while for the No. 2 pair of Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat to get going, but the freshman duo squeaked out a 21-19 opening-set win and breezed to a 21-6 second set sweep. 

The Lasers provided some resistance in the second round of matches as they won the opening set at the No. 1 and No. 3 pairs.  However, the `Runners came on strong in the second and third sets in both matches.  Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner won 16-21, 22-20 and 15-9 at the top spot in the lineup and Sidney Wicks and Hana Makonova earned a dramatic 19-21, 21-15, 15-13 win at No. 3.  At the fifth position, Brooke Boiseau and Krista Hernandez cruised to a 21-8, 21-20 sweep.
