CSUB Upsets #15 Hawai'i, Advances to BW Quarterfinals

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Cal State Bakersfield came to play on Day 1 of the Big West Beach Volleyball Championships. The Roadrunners came into pool play of the tournament as the 6th-seeded team with a matchup against Hawai'i, the #15-ranked team in the country, and Bakersfield delivered an upset victory over the Rainbow Wahine.

Bakersfield handed the ‘Bows a 3-2 loss, CSUB’s first win in program history against Hawai'i (0-12 previously). Three of the five matches came down to the tiebreaker set, with the `Runners taking two of those three points.

With four pairings decided and a 2-2 score, all eyes turned to the No. 3 court. Bakersfield's Katey Milne and Ella Ensign were locked in a three-set battle with their Hawai'i counterparts, but the `Runner duo pulled away to clinch a 15-9 decision and the team victory on the match.

Bakersfield's other two team points came from their top pairing of Ella Erteltova and Vivi Kaelin and the 5s, Olivia Silacci-Jensen and Brooklyn Thomas.

The victory gave the `Runners momentum as they continued pool play, but Bakersfield was unable to replicate the magic against #10 Long Beach State, dropping a 5-0 decision.

Going 1-1 on the first day of the Big West Championship, CSUB has advanced into the tournament Quarterfinals on Friday in Santa Monica. Bakersfield's quarterfinal matchup will be against 5th-seeded UC Davis at 9:45 a.m. (PT). The two teams met a month ago in San Luis Obispo, Calif. where the Aggies defeated the `Runners 4-1.

The winner of that match will face Long Beach State in the semifinals at 12:15 PM and Friday's Championship Match is scheduled for 2:15 PM.
