Popham, D’Arcy Win Events, Rewrite CSUB Top 5 Lists

LOS ANGELES – The Roadrunner swimming teams got off to a great start at the Pepperdine Winter Invitational on Friday. CSU Bakersfield enjoyed outstanding efforts up and down the roster with freshman Mikayla Popham and sophomore Autumn D'Arcy rewriting the `Runner Top 5 all-time lists in multiple races.

"Both Mikayla and Autumn entered CSUB's all-time Top 5 in four events tonight while also winning events," said Chris Hansen, Bakersfield's Director of Swimming. "Mikayla's 500 free time is just two seconds off our school record, then she came back less than an hour later to swim and win the 50 free. Having two girls go 23.1, Mikayla and Autumn, is huge. Autumn's winning time in the 50 fly was fast! These two girls are on fire."

D'Arcy led off the CSUB 200 free relay with a 50 free split of 23.11, which moved the sophomore into second all-time for the `Runners. Along with Popham, Abigail Abshire, and Ellice Richman, D'Arcy helped the `Runner 200 free relay team posted CSUB's fifth-fastest all-time swim (1:33.72).

With a third-place finish in the 500 free, Popham posted a time of 4:50.42 to rank second all-time for the `Runners. The freshman came right back out in the 50 free, won the event, and claimed second in CSUB's history with a time of 23.10, just .01 faster than her teammate's earlier mark. D'Arcy's time of 23.78 earned her a victory in the 50 fly by almost a whole second.

Hansen continued on to applaud the rest of his top female performers on Friday: "Isabella Magalong, Tabea Mose, Lindsey Sohoel-Smith, Jayssie Haynes, and Ariane Skeggs all had season bests in their races today."

Haynes, a senior, posted her fastest mid-season 500 free time (4:58.55) during Friday morning's prelims session before finishing seventh overall. Skeggs came in less than three seconds behind Haynes in the finals with a best time of 5:02.30 in the prelims. Magalong posted Top 16 times in both the 200 IM (2:06.18) and the 50 fly (26.11) on Friday.

Along with Popham and D'Arcy, Mose and Sohoel-Smith helped CSUB's 400 medley relay team post a time of 3:44.11, third-best in Bakersfield's history. Individually, Mose placed third in the 50 back with a time of 26.08 while Sohoel-Smith swam the 50 breast in 29.64 to finish sixth.

On the men's side, Hansen highlighted a pair of juniors in Loren Gillilan and Kris Rogic: "Loren and Kris led the way for the men. Loren won the 50 fly in one of his fastest swims during the season. Kris only swam the 50 back because we are resting him for the US Open, but he ended up swimming his best time for a third-place finish. It's weird not seeing Kris swim his events, but it's great to see him swimming this fast in some of his other events."

Gillilan won the 50 fly with a mark of 21.79 while swimming four total events on Friday. Rogic placed third in the 50 back (22.52) and was also in a pair of CSUB relays in Los Angeles.

"Julio Alcantar, Alex Rodriguez, Noah Hultner, and Ryan Brimer all had great swims tonight," Hansen said. "Seeing Julio turn into the swimmer he has become is really exciting and I'm excited to see the rest of the weekend. It was a great first night!"

Alcantar swam a 1:55.00 in the prelims of the men's 200 IM. Rodriguez placed 18th overall in the 500 free with a time of 4:38.05. Also swimming the 500 free, Hultner swam a 4:37.21 in the prelims, but finished just behind Rodriguez in the finals. Brimer joined his teammates for two relays on Friday and posted a time of 21.11 in the 50 free prelims.

The `Runner swimmers will return to the pool at East Los Angeles College on Saturday for another full day of swimming. Morning prelims will once again kick off at 9 a.m. while evening finals are set to begin at 5 p.m.
