`Runner Swimmers Ready for Pepperdine Winter Invite

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield swimming and diving teams are preparing for an important meet this weekend. The Roadrunners are headed to the Pepperdine Winter Invite, Nov. 22-24, at East LA College in Los Angeles, with the chance to break school records and solidify trips to the Western Athletic Conference Championships on the line.

"This a big weekend for us," said Chris Hansen, CSUB's Director of Swimming. "This meet will help us determine potential WAC relays as well as our WAC travel squad. To make finals, we will have to swim fast in the morning." The `Runners will test their mettle against several strong programs including California Baptist, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly, UC San Diego, Loyola Marymount, and San Diego.

"We are approaching this meet a little different this year for our top swimmers: Kris Rogic, Autumn D'Arcy, Mikayla Popham, and Loren Gillilan," Hansen said. "These four will be focusing on this meet as well as the US Open in Atlanta the first week of December. They could see some events at this meet and they are not fully rested. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see them get close to some NCAA cuts."

Hansen went on to describe who he expects to help D'Arcy and Popham lead the CSUB women's squad: "The ladies will look to Jayssie Haynes and Maddie Cosgrove to score some big points and threaten to win some events. Newcomer Eliana Klubnikin is coming off a great California Baptist meet and looks to continue to move up our breaststroke rankings. Ariane Skeggs, Lindsey Sohoel-Smith, Maya Valdoria, Tabea Mose, and Abigail Abshire will also be swimmers to watch as they have been having a great dual meet season so far."

"For the men, we just want to continue swimming fast," Hansen continued. "This has been a great year so far for the men and this meet could put this team in the record books. Kris and Loren will look to seniors Michael Hart and Richie Campbell as well as juniors Ryan Brimer, Alex Dragan, and Noah Hickman to help them lead the way. All five of these gentlemen have been having a great year. I expect freshmen Alex Rodriguez and Zach Serrano to have a great meet; they have been impressive so far. Antonio Milin is also a big one to watch; he could surprise some folks."

The `Runner swimmers will kick off the Pepperdine Winter Invite on Friday, Nov. 22, with the first of three days of competition. Morning prelims sessions will start each day at 9 a.m. while finals on Friday and Saturday begin at 5 p.m. and at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
