CSUB Swim Set for Home Openers, Dive Heads to Riverside

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The first home event of the 2019-20 season has arrived for CSU Bakersfield's swimming teams as the Roadrunner are preparing to host a two-day event at the Hillman Aquatic Center. On Friday, Oct. 18, a strong field will come to Bakersfield to participate in the CSUB Sprint Classic while Saturday's Roadrunner Invite promises a full day of swimming action. Meanwhile, the `Runner divers will tackle the Lancer Diving Invite in Riverside, Calif. on Saturday, rounding out a busy weekend of action for CSUB.

"We are excited to host the second annual CSUB Sprint Classic and Roadrunner Invite," said Chris Hansen, Bakersfield's Director of Swimming. "UC Santa Barbara, San José State and some WAC teams in California Baptist and Dixie State will be attending. This meet is great for us to test out many different relay orders and swimmers for the WAC championships." Hansen also commented that he looks forward to using the meets as an opportunity to swim some off events and see which WAC events will be the team's most important focal points.

"The men will look to add some more depth to their roster while looking to Kris Rogic and Loren Gillilan to lead the way in event wins," Hansen continued. "The women are looking to continue to climb the rankings – 21st in Division I and 2nd among mid-major schools as of this week. To do that, all the ladies will need to swim fast. The women will look to Autumn D'Arcy, Jayssie Haynes, Maddie Cosgrove, Mikayla Popham, and Lindsey Sohoel-Smith, who have led the team in event wins this year."

The `Runners are also looking forward to continuing a fun tradition in which they host these two events during their alumni weekend, highlighted by the Wall of Fame luncheon. This year, former coach Bob Steele and alumni Chris Breitbart (1995-98), Sheri Sacks (1992-94), and Kelsey Lange (2013-16) will be inducted after the meet on Saturday. CSUB will also be honoring the 2004 Men's NCAA Division II National Championship squad, the last team to win a title before CSUB moved to Division I in 2007-08.

When asked about the `Runner divers, Hansen expressed optimistic hopes for their performances at California Baptist's meet: "Sam Stinson and Adam Estrella will look to dominate the men's field while Lauren Carson and Madi Gray look to get on the medal stand."

Fans are encouraged to come out to the Hillman Aquatic Center on Friday and Saturday. Admission is free for all fans. For a full schedule of this weekend's events, visit the CSUB swimming and diving schedule page.
