Davis Makes Major League Debut

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday afternoon, former CSU Bakersfield left-handed pitcher Austin Davis made his Major League Baseball debut and stuck out Kolten Wong of the St. Louis Cardinals as the Phillies won 4-3.

Davis became the first Roadrunner to earn a Major League call-up on Monday and today became the first player from CSUB to play in a Major League game.

With the game tied at three, Davis, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., entered the game in the top of the seventh inning in relief of Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta.  The first two batters Davis faced were left-handed.  He allowed a single to center field to his first batter Greg Garcia, but struck out Wong to record his first major league out.

With the pitcher's spot due up next, the Cardinals called on right-handed batter Harrison Bader to pinch-hit, to which Phillies manager Gabe Kapler responded by replacing Davis with Edubray Ramos for the more ideal righty-righty matchup.

The Phillies (39-33) hit the road for a three-game series with the Washington Nationals and will be featured on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN this week in the series finale.
