Baseball Continues Homestand Tomorrow Night

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSU Bakersfield baseball team will close its five-game homestand tomorrow night at Hardt Field when they welcome Loyola Marymount University for a non-conference game.  First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.

Series History
Loyola Marymount leads the all-time series 9-2, including a 4-1 win at Page Stadium two weeks ago.  Trevin Esquerra hit a two-run homer to provide the Lions with a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.  Jake Ortega knocked in CSUB's only run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to center field, but LMU added insurance in the seventh and eighth to earn a 4-1 victory.  The Lions used six pitchers in the game to hold CSUB to just five hits.  Luis Martinez and Andrew Penner both had a single and a walk.  Isaac Meza was the tough-luck loser after he threw seven innings and allowed just three runs, while striking out four.  Josh Robins earned the win for the Lions and CJ Fernandezees picked up his first save of the season.

The Roadrunners are 2-5 all-time against LMU at Hardt Field with the last victory over the Lions coming at Page Stadium on May 26 of 2010.

Scouting the Lions
LMU hasn't played in nine days after taking last week off.  After the Lions beat CSUB on April 24, they lost 2-of-3 at Gonzaga the following weekend.  Loyola Marymount is currently in fifth in the West Coast Conference standings at 12-9, which is exactly where they were picked to finish in the regular season.  Senior Jamey Smart was a preseason All-WCC selection as an outfielder.  Smart is hitting .287 for the season with nine doubles and 37 knocked in.  The Lions and `Runners have a number of common opponents this season including Portland, UC Santa Barbara, Hawaii and UNLV.  CSUB is 5-3 against those four ball clubs, while LMU is 3-6.

Pitching Matchup
RHP Kevin Altamirano (0-0, 9.77 ERA) vs. LHP Holden Christian (0-2, 7.06 ERA)

Altamirano will get his second start of his freshman season on Tuesday night.  In his last appearance, he gave up an unearned run against UC Santa Barbara after allowing a walk and a hit, while recording just one out.  Earlier this season at LMU, the freshman threw one inning and gave up an unearned run against the Lions.  In his first career start against Cal Poly, he tossed four innings and gave up three earned runs on two hits and two walks.

Christian started against the Roadrunners two weeks ago in LA.  The freshman faced just 10 batters in three innings and allowed just one walk.  His last outing was on April 29 at Gonzaga when he allowed two runs in 1.2 innings pitched.

Last Time Out
The Roadrunners had a great opportunity to end Grand Canyon University's 14 conference series winning streak on Sunday as they pushed the Lopes to extra innings, but GCU rallied with three runs in the 10th to claim the series.

The Lopes scored in all but two innings on Friday night and scored multiple runs in first, second and third innings as they built an 11-0 lead after five innings.  CSUB starter Alec Daily lasted just two innings and gave up eight runs on just five hits.  Just four of Daily's eight runs were earned as CSUB committed a season-high five errors.

On Saturday, the Roadrunners trailed 7-2 as the game entered the bottom of the eighth inning, but CSUB exploded for a season-high seven runs in the frame to steal a 9-7 victory from the Lopes.  CSUB sent 12 men to the plate in the inning and had just four hits.  The first three men singled to start the inning and Ryan Koch drew a walk to force in a run.  Jassen Oliver slapped a two-run single to left and Buck Anderson and Jake Ortega produced the game-tying and game-winning RBI singles later in the inning.  Noah Barba added some insurance with a sacrifice fly to left to close the scoring.

Davonte Butler was stellar in relief as he allowed just two hits over the final three innings to earn his second victory of the season and his first since his first career appearance on February 18.

CSUB rallied from 2-0, 3-2 and 5-3 deficits to push the game into extra innings on Sunday before falling 8-5.  Kyle King got CSUB out of a jam in the ninth, but Zach Malis hit his third home run of the day to lead off the 10th.

Andrew Penner capped a huge week for the home team with three more hits on Sunday.  He had at least two hits in all four games last week and was 7-for-13 with two runs and three RBI in the series.  Ortega also had a huge series with six hits, three runs scored and two huge RBI.  Buck Anderson also filled in nicely for Daniel Carrizosa up the middle with four hits, two runs scored and a RBI.
