`Runners Fall in Extras to Gauchos

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team battled back from 3-0 and 5-3 deficits on Tuesday night at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, but could never take the lead and fell to UC Santa Barbara 6-5 in 10 innings.

CSUB (18-33) held the Gauchos scoreless for five straight innings, but were unable to keep them off the board in the 10thSteven Gee (0-2) hit the first batter of the inning before giving way to Michael Bovee Jr.  The freshman struck out the first batter he faced, but allowed back-to-back infield singles to load the bases.  With one out, Tommy Jew hit a sacrifice fly to right field as the Gauchos walked off with the victory.

UCSB (24-24-1) opened the scoring with a three-run second inning, but the `Runners answered with three of their own in the fourth.  Ryan Koch doubled to start the inning and Daniel Nist doubled him home with one out.  Luis Martinez followed with a two-run homer to left field to tie the score.  It was Martinez's team-leading fifth long ball of the season.

The Gauchos reclaimed a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the inning, but CSUB added solo tallies in the sixth and the seventh to tie the score.  Ryan Koch hit a home run off the foul pole in the sixth to cut the lead in half and Daniel Carrizosa knocked in Evan Berkey in the seventh after Berkey tripled to start the inning.

The `Runners got solid outings from a pair of relievers to send the game to extra innings.  Kevin Altamirano tossed 3.1 scoreless innings after coming on for Andrew Ciandro in the fourth inning.  Kyle King had four strikeouts as he tossed scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth innings.  King got himself out of a jam in the ninth as the Gauchos had runners on second and third with two outs, but King got Jason Willow to strikeout to end the threat.  In total, UCSB stranded 13 baserunners in the game.

Andrew Penner and Koch both had two hits from the middle of the Roadrunner order and had a pair of hits and a RBI from the nine spot.

CSUB returns home on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. as they welcome Chicago State University to Hardt Field.  The `Runners are looking to clinch the sixth and final spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament this weekend.
