CSUB Inches Closer to WAC Tournament Berth with Offensive Explosion

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team's magic number to clinching a Western Athletic Conference Tournament berth is down to one game after the Roadrunners defeated Chicago State University 14-2 on Thursday night.

The Roadrunners (19-33, 9-13) got down on the scoreboard 1-0 midway through the second inning, but roared back with 10 straight runs to take a 10-1 lead after four innings.  After the Cougars scored a single tally in the fifth, CSUB added four more runs in the sixth inning as they defeated Chicago State because of the 10-run conference rule in seven innings.  CSUB's victory coupled with New Mexico State University's win over the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley means the `Runners need to win just one more game or have the Vaqueros lose one more game to clinch the sixth and final spot in the WAC Tournament.

CSUB's 14 runs match a season-best they set earlier this season against UC Davis on February 18 and the 17 hits are a new season-high.  It is just the second time the `Runners have had at least 15 hits this season.  Every single batter in the lineup contributed to the offensive explosion for CSUB.  The first eight batters in the `Runner order had at least one hit and the nine hitter, Daniel Carrizosa, knocked in a pair of runs by executing a squeeze play and hitting a sacrifice fly.

The first three batters in the order, Jake Ortega, Noah Barba and Andrew Penner, all had two hits for CSUB.  Three hitters were perfect on the night.  Jassen Oliver was 3-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, Luis Martinez was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and Evan Berkey set a new career-high with four hits in four at-bats.

Grant Trower (1-5) took the loss after tossing the first three inning and allowing five runs, while Yunis Halim allowed five more in just one inning.  Dylan Cumming let four cross the plate over the final two frames.

Alec Daily (5-3) picked up his team-leading fifth victory as he tossed CSUB's first complete game since assistant coach Max Carter went the distance against the University of Northern Colorado on May 5 of last season.  Daily needed just 82 pitches to toss the first complete game of his career.  Just one of Daily's runs were earned and he scattered five hits and four walks.

Chicago State's Zach Thomas and Tyler Lowe both had a pair of hits to lead the Cougar offense.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at Hardt Field.  Freshman Davonte Butler (2-7) will oppose Joe Fitka (1-4) in Game 2 of the three-game series.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
