CSUB Hosts Gauchos on Tuesday Night

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSU Bakersfield baseball team will host UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday night at Hardt Field to open a five-game homestand over the next eight days.

Series History
CSUB and UCSB have split 18 meetings between the two programs.  The Roadrunners and the Gauchos also split two meetings last season with both teams winning on their home field.  Last season at Hardt Field, UCSB was ranked No. 24 in the country, but Isaiah Moten and Naithen Dewsnap combined to toss a four-hitter as CSUB scored a 2-1 upset.  Jake Ortega also hit a RBI double to aid the offensive effort.  Andrew Penner had two hits and a walk in the victory.

Later in the season, UCSB returned the favor with a 6-4 victory.  Tomorrow's probable starter Ben Brecht started for the Gauchos, but allowed four runs on six hits in four innings and did not receive a decision.  Mark Pena had two hits and scored twice from the leadoff spot, while Penner had three hits and a RBI.

Scouting the Gauchos
UCSB was picked to finish fourth in the Big West in the conference's preseason poll.  So far, the Gauchos are .500 in conference play and are coming off a series victory against UC Riverside.  UC Santa Barbara has plenty of common opponents with the Roadrunners.  The Gauchos were swept by San Diego St., beat Dartmouth College and Loyola Marymount University, lost three-game series to UC Davis and Sacramento State and swept UTRGV.

Brecht threw an inning on Sunday against UC Riverside and allowed three runs.  A sophomore left-hander, Brecht has started six games this season and has 31 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched.  In his second start of the season, he struck out nine batters against Penn St. and earned a victory over Sacramento State after throwing five scoreless innings.  He has won his last two starts, beating Loyola Marymount on April 10 and USC on April 17.

Last Time Out
For the fourth time in five conference series, CSUB won Friday night's series opener.  Alec Daily didn't receive a decision on Friday night, but struck out six batters in six innings.  Andrew Ciandro had the best outing of his young career on Friday.  Ciandro entered the game in the seventh inning and tossed three scoreless innings and struck out three, while allowing just two hits to earn his first career victory.

Trailing 4-3 in the seventh inning, CSUB took a one-run advantage on RBI groundouts by Daniel Carrizosa and Evan Berkey.   Sergio Robles walked to start the inning, and Jake Ortega followed with a base hit bunt.  Ortega dove head first to reach safely and while everyone was collecting themselves, Robles alertly moved to third and Ortega followed suit on the throw over.  Carrizosa scored Robles and Berkey knocked in Ortega.

In the eighth, Andrew Penner and Ryan Koch both reached on errors to start the inning and with both runners in scoring position and the infield in, Luis Martinez singled up the gut to put CSUB out in front 7-5.

Making his first start since March 17 vs. Dartmouth College, Noah Barba made a huge impact for the `Runners.  He singled and scored on a double by Penner in the first and clubbed his first career home run in the third to tie the game at three.  He had his first career three-hit game and scored twice.

On Saturday and Sunday, the `Runners spotted the Redhawks with a seven- and six-run lead and were unable to complete comebacks.  In Game 2, Andrew Penner had three hits and three RBI, including his second home of the season in the fourth inning.  He struck again in the fifth as he singled home Buck Anderson and Carrizosa.  Ryan Koch had two hits and two knocked in and Carrizosa had two hits and a double.

In the series finale, Barba had his second three-hit game of the series and Carrizosa had two hits, a RBI and a run scored.  Robles chipped in with a RBI triple.

Ben Cutting had a solid outing in relief on Sunday.  He tossed the final 3.2 innings and struck out a career-high six batters, while allowing just one earned run.  Aaron Charles also had a scoreless appearance on Saturday.

For the series, the `Runners hit .291 as a team, but had a team ERA of 6.84.  Barba hit .500 and slugged .714 over the three-game set.  He led the team in runs scored (4), hits (7), total bases (10), slugging percentage (.714) and on-base percentage (.553).  He also had two assists from the outfield and made some impressive defensive plays.  Carrizosa also had a nice series with four this and three knocked in.
