CSUB Heads to Utah Valley for Conference Series

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – In need of a series victory, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team heads to Utah Valley University on Friday to take on the Wolverines for a three-game Western Athletic Conference set.

Dugout Talks

Series History
The Wolverines lead the all-time series 9-5, but the Roadrunners swept Utah Valley last season at Hardt Field and enter the game on a three-game winning streak in the series. Mark Pena had four hits and two RBI in CSUB's 10-0 victory in the series opener.  Andrew Penner also had three hits and Cole Valletta had a pair as the `Runners exploded for 20 hits.  In Saturday's victory, Pena had two more hits and Jake Ortega had a two-run triple as CSUB clinched the series with a 9-5 win.  In the series finale, Penner was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.  Isaiah Moten picked up the win after pitching a perfect seventh inning and Naithen Dewsnap picked up the save.

Scouting the Wolverines
Utah Valley was picked to finish sixth in the WAC preseason poll and enter the weekend with a 12-19 record overall and sit in sixth place in the conference standings with a 4-5 mark.  The Wolverines have lost four straight overall and were swept by Grand Canyon University last weekend after taking two out of three games against UTRGV and the University of Northern Colorado.  Utah Valley is just 5-4 at home this season and is hitting .270 as a team with an ERA of 5.24.

Pitching Matchups
CSUB Utah Valley
Friday LHP Alec Daily (2-1, 3.18 ERA) RHP Jake Mayer (1-4, 3.58 ERA)
Saturday RHP Naithen Dewsnap (1-3, 2.77 ERA)  RHP Walker Ramsey (2-4, 6.81 ERA)
Sunday TBA RHP Kaden Schmitt (3-1, 3.82 ERA)

The Roadrunners will start off the series with a pair of seniors.  Daily will take the ball for his usual Friday night start against the Wolverines.  Both of Daily's starts this season have come in conference play.  Last Friday against New Mexico State University, Daily tossed six innings and gave up two earned runs, while striking out three.  His 3.18 ERA ranks second on the team, only behind Saturday's starter Naithen Dewsnap.  The Wolverines will counter with senior Jake Mayer.  Mayer has lost all three of his conference starts.  He threw eight innings in his last start at Grand Canyon University and allowed five runs and eight hits.

Dewsnap will be making his second career start.  The preseason All-American relief pitcher was thrust into the starting role last weekend against the Aggies.  He shutout the NM State lineup through the first five innings he pitched, but the Aggies got to him in the sixth.  He exited after allowing three earned runs in a career-high 5.1 innings pitched.  Utah Valley will turn to junior Walker Ramsey.  Ramsey is 1-1 in conference action.  He has yet to last longer than six innings in seven starts this season and opposing hitters are batting .323 off of him.

Head coach Jeremy Beard has yet to name a start for Sunday's game.  CSUB freshman Davonte Butler has been a regular in the `Runner rotation this season.  Elijah Parks, Kyle King, Aaron Charles and Isaiah Moten all have multiple starts under their belts this season.  The Wolverines' Kaden Schmitt has thrown a complete game this season against UTRGV.  In his last start against GCU, he took the loss after tossing 5.1 innings and allowing three earned runs.

Last Time Out
Playing their fourth home game in five days, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead against Cal Poly on Tuesday.  Unfortunately, the Roadrunners were unable to keep pace with the Mustang offense and lost 11-8 at Hardt Field.

The `Runners jumped all over the first two Cal Poly pitchers on Tuesday.  CSUB scored three times in the second inning on Thomas Triantos and five times off of Michael Clark in the fourth and fifth innings combined.

Ryan Koch got things going in the second with a leadoff triple and came around on a groundout by Jake Ortega.  Luis Martinezcontinued his hot hitting with a two-out single up the middle andMark Pena was hit by a pitch before Daniel Carrizosa walked to load the bases.  Austyn Tengan drew a walk to bring the second run of the inning across the plate and Pena trotted home on a wild pitch.

In the third, CSUB took advantage of three Cal Poly miscues in the field to plate four runs.  Pena had a RBI base hit in the inning and Carrizosa also singled to center to drive in a run.  The `Runners loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth, but were only able to manage a solo tally when Alec Daily grounded into a double play against the third Mustang pitcher of the evening, Austin Dondanville (1-0).

Dondanville finished the game on the mound for the Mustangs and allowed just one hit and faced just 17 batters as the `Runner lineup was unable to solve the junior right-hander.

Kevin Altamirano earned his first career start on the mound and shutout the Mustangs over the first four innings.  He failed to record an out before exiting in the fifth and was relieved by Isaiah Moten, who allowed two earned runs and four runs total in just an inning.

Kyle King (1-3) took the ball next for CSUB and struck out the side in the sixth inning.  It was a tough outing for King as he allowed five unearned runs in the seventh inning, including a three-run homer to Scott Ogrin that put the Mustangs up 9-8.  Cal Poly added another run off of Aaron Chalres and Andrew Ciandro tossed a scoreless ninth for the `Runners.

Pena led the offensive attack with two hits and
two runs scored, while Koch crossed the plate twice.  Seven of the nine
CSUB hitters had a hit in the game.
