Freshmen Highlight Day 2 Of WAC Championships For CSUB Men

HOUSTON, Texas – CSU Bakersfield's men's swimming and diving team continued its success from the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Championships into Day 2. CSUB saw more Top 5 all-time marks made while a pair of freshmen impressed against the best of the WAC.

"Kris Rogic dropped time in prelims to go on and swim a best time with a strong finish in the 200 IM finals," said Chris Hansen, CSUB's Director of Swimming. "Kris was the only freshman in the event. I'm pumped to see his progress in this event for the future. Freshman Alex Dragan also swam a best time to get Top 16. Senior Lovre Soric was sick just a week ago but is swimming like a true champion."

Rogic, a native of Croatia, continues to do big things for the `Runners by making it into the A finals for the 200 individual medley. Dropping another 0.14 seconds from prelims, his time (1:48.64) earned the freshman Second Team All-WAC. Owen van Krimpen also made it back in the B final, scoring points for the `Runners with a fourth-place finish. Hansen added "Both Owen and Steven Valiente swam great this morning, and Noah Hultner swam his best time. Both raced hard tonight to score us some points."

"Having six guys go 20 seconds in the 50 today is huge for us," Hansen explained enthusiastically. "I'm not sure we have ever done that." In such a competitive event, freshman Loren Gillilan was able to place seventh in the B finals with an overall best time (20.49). Teammates Jaren Hopkins (21.47), Ryan Brimer (20.86), Joe Cobarrubias (20.76), and Richie Campbell (20.81) were of the six swimmers to hit personal bests throughout finals and prelims.

The CSUB freshmen duo of Adam Estrella and Andrew Huerta finished 13th and 15th, respectively, in the 1-meter diving prelims. Both men improved their results in the consolation finals as Estrella posted a score of 223.60 while Huerta scored 181.05 points. "Divers Adam and Andrew continue to score and gain a ton of experience and I cant wait to see what they do tomorrow," Hansen said.

The men's 200 freestyle relay was not too far off the CSUB's all time Top 5 list with a time of 1:21.59. "The relay with Lovre, Loren, Joe, and Richie Campbell was okay," Hansen said. "This is the weakest of our five relays and we still beat Air Force and Seattle U."

The `Runner men will return to the pool in Houston for Day 3 of 4 on Friday at the WAC Championships.
