`Runners Fall To Oregon State, 13-23

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield wrestling team finished its last dual of the season honoring its three seniors: Matt Williams, Sergio Mendez and Coleman Hammond. The Roadrunners struggled with two starters out and having to make last minute roster changes but came close to cutting Oregon State's lead but fell short 13-23.
 
"Last year we had a tough match like this against Oregon State and we bounced back at the Pac 12 championships," said Manny Rivera head coach of CSUB wrestling. "If we prepare harder like we did last year I am confident we will do well."
 
The dual started at the 197 bout with No.15 redshirt senior Matt Williams and No. 14 Corey Griego (OSU). Griego jumped out with four-point near fall and a takedown to take the lead in the first period at 6-1. Williams adds a takedown and an escape to cut Griego lead by 2 and end the period 4-6. Into the third period and OSU starts on bottom getting a quick escape and a takedown but Williams would respond with 2 point near fall and a takedown. However time out be in OSU's favor as Griego breaks the redshirt senior's undefeated season with a 11-10 decision over Williams.
 
At 285, Mark Penyacsek went against No. 8 Amar Dhesi (OSU). Dhesi gets a late tech fall in the match at 27-12 over Penyacsek. Oregon State gets 8-0 lead over Bakersfield.
 
In 125 bout No. 28 redshirt senior Sergio Mendez went head to head with No. 12 Ronnie Rios (OSU). Rios took a quick 8-1 lead in the first period. Into the second period and Mendez adds an early escape to end the period, 2-8. The redshirt senior added a last second takedown but it was not enough to win as Rios ended the match with a one point riding time to win by a 9-4 decision.
 
Knowing CSUB was down 11-0, No.28 redshirt junior Sean Nickell knew he needed to get CSUB on the board. Nickell gets an escape in the first period against Devan Turner (OSU) but Turner ended the period 2-1. Nickell adds a takedown and an escape in the final four minutes to win by a 4-2 decision over Turner and gives Bakersfield its first three points of the night.
 
At 141, No. 26 Russell Rohlfing gets two takedowns to start with a 4-2 lead over Jack Hathaway (OSU). Rohlfing adds another takedown in the second to get a 6-2 lead in the second. The redshirt sophomore added another takedown and had over a minute of riding time to win by 9-5 decision over Hathaway.
 
Wrestling for the first time at 149 was Noah Blakley-Beanes filing in for Kalani Tonge. Beanes matched up against Josh Reyes (OSU) and held on for the full seven minutes but lost in a 4-7 decision against Reyes.
 
At 157, No. 14 redshirt senior Coleman Hammond and Hunter Willits (OSU) went scoreless in the first period. Hammond took the first point of the match with an escape and ended the second period 1-0. Willits answered back in the third period with an escape and a takedown to win the match in a 3-2 decision over Hammond. OSU added three more points to take a 17-6 lead over Bakersfield.
 
Redshirt sophomore Jacob Thalin (165) and Rodney Williams (OSU) also go scoreless in the first period. Thalin gets two takedowns and an escape while Williams had an escape to end the second period 5-1. The redshirt sophomore continued to surge in the third period and win by a 14-5 major decision over Williams.
 
Competing in the 174 bout for the second time this weekend was redshirt sophomore Lorenzo De La Riva who had two late takedowns in the first period to take a 4-1 lead against Myles Terry (OSU). Del La Riva jumped into the second period with four point nearfall and a takedown to take a big 11-1 lead at the end of the period. The redshirt sophomore added another takedown in the third period to go 13-4 but Terry would win the match with a late pin at 6:13 over De La Riva.
 
Ending with the 184 bout, Dominic Ducharme takes a 4-1 lead in the first period over Bob Coleman (OSU). Ducharme adds another takedown, a four point nearfall and an escape in the final four minutes to win in a 9-5 decision over Coleman.
 
Coach Rivera went on to discuss how the team will prepare for the Pac 12 Championships, "We are going to build a strong base here in the couple of weeks by getting our bodies back in to shape and getting stronger to taper for the next week. At this point it's a matter of feeling your best."
 
CSUB (6-10, 1-3 PAC-12) will get ready for the Pac 12 Championships. The `Runners will travel to Corvallis, Oregon for an all-day tournament on Feb. 25 to try and earn a spot in the NCAA championships in March.
