Biography

2018-19 (R-SENIOR): Totaled a 25-10 record at 133 pounds...went 13-3 in duals and was 4-0 in Pac-12 action....made third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament...went 1-2 with 16-2 decision over No. 32 Zack Trampe of Binghamton at the NCAA Championships...won second career Pac-12 title, defeating Oregon State's Devan Turner 5-0 and winning by injury defeault over Stanford's Mason Pengilly in the title match....went 3-1 at the Roadrunner Open to place second and recorded a technical fall over Simpson's Sergio Montoya...advanced to the second day of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational after going 3-1 on the first day...produced a fourth-place finish at the Southern Scuffle, going 4-2 with losses coming against national runner-up Daton Fix of Oklahoma State and All-American Roman Bravo-Young of Penn State...upset No. 14 Matthew Schmitt of West Virginia 2-1...was second on the team with five wins by technical fall...all 10 losses came against nationally-ranked foes...Second Team Pac-12 All-Academic Team. 

2017-18 (R-JUNIOR):
Totaled a 24-12 record...finished tied for third on the team in wins...was 11-4 in duals and 3-0 in Pac-12 action...won by decision 13 times, major decision four times and by tech fall seven times...finished third at Pac-12 Championships to qualify for NCAA Championships…lost opening match of NCAA Tournament, but advanced by medial forfeit and earned a 13-8 decision over No. 9 Dennis Gustafson of Virginia Tech...lost opening match at Pac-12 Championship, but won back-to-back decisions over Cal Poly's Ty Schilling and Oregon State's Devan Turner to take third...won title at Roadrunner Open, outscoring opponents 56-12 and recording two tech falls...ended regular season on a six-match dual winning streak from Jan. 14 to Feb. 11...had an eight-match winning streak beginning with a tech fall of Pittsburgh's Jake Cherry on Nov. 17 and continued through the Roadrunner Open and into the Cliff Keen Invitational on Dec. 1...named second team Academic All-Conference.

2016-17 (R-SOPHOMORE): Earned the Pac-12’s automatic berth to the NCAA Championships by winning the conference title...was 3-0 in the tournament including a 7-5 victory over Arizona State’s Sean Kramer in the finals...went 0-2 at the NCAA Championships...won first seven matches of season including the tournament title at the Roadrunner Open...went 5-2 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational to earn a sixth place finish...was 4-2 at the Reno Tournament of champions...named second team Academic All-Conference...tied for team lead in victories with Russell Rohlfing (23-12).

2015-16 (REDSHIRT): Sat out the season as a redshirt at CSUB...went 22-8 in open competition...won the 125 pound titles at the San Francisco State Open, Fresno City College Open, and the California Open...placed fifth at the Roadrunner Open and was sixth at the National Collegiate Open.

2014-15 (FRESHMAN): Dropped season opener, 9-1 to Stanford’s Mason Pengilly...went 1-1 at the Gilroy Duals, winning by forfeit against Illinois...went 2-3 at the Roadrunner Open...was 1-2 at the Reno Tournament of Champions...finished second at the Menlo Open after going 3-1...is 10-9 after losing at Oregon State.

HIGH SCHOOL: A 2014 graduate of Bakersfield High School...coach was former Roadrunner wrestler Andy Varner...a 2014 state qualifier...won Southwest Yosemite League championships in 2013 and 2014...chosen SWYL Outstanding Lower Weight wrestler in 2013...named first team Bakersfield Californian All-Area as a senior...qualified for the junior nationals from 2011-13, earning All-American honors five times...earned a spot in the 2010 Cadet Nationals...a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and the Hawke Honors Program.
 
PERSONAL: Born Oct. 4, 1995...son of Ronald and Kimberly Nickell...an engineering major...brother Ian is a member of the Bakersfield wrestling team.
