CSUB Comes Up Short Against Duke But Defeats UNC

GREENLY, CO. – CSU Bakersfield's wrestling team traveled to Colorado for a tri-dual against Duke and Northern Colorado. Roadrunners fell just short of Duke, 17-25 in the morning but came back and defeated Northern Colorado. `Runners are 4-8 in duals for the season.
 
Despite losing to the Blue Devils four `Runners came out on top. Sergio Mendez (125) had a major decision 8-0 over Thayer Atkins while teammate Russell Rohlfing competing in the 141 bout also had a major decisions (12-2) over Jeremiah Reitz. Redshirt senior Matt Williams (197) maintains his perfect dual record on the season by defeating Alec Schenk in a 5-2 decision. Meanwhile Dominic Ducharme (184) added another pin to his season (5-1) against Kaden Russell in 2:39.
 
The afternoon proved to go better in favor for the `Runners as they defeated the bears. Mendez earned another win for the day defeating Michael Johnson in a 9-3 decision. Redshirt Sean Nickell (133) won by a major decision over Rico Montoya 13-4 while in the next weight class (141) teammate Russell Rohlfing also won by a 11-1 major decision against Benjamin Polkowske.
 
Coleman Hammond came back to win in the afternoon by a major decision over Tyler Kinn, 16-4. Securing the lead for Bakersfield was Matt Williams as he is now 11-0 in the season in duals after defeating Tanner Davis in a 6-2 decision.
 
The Roadrunners (4-8) will return to the Icardo Center to host Utah Valley Saturday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.
