CSUB Opens WAC Play At GCU This Weekend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—The CSU Bakersfield baseball team opens Western Athletic Conference play this weekend when the Roadrunners travel to Grand Canyon.

Coverage on the WAC Digital Network of Friday's opener begins at 7 p.m. Saturday's first pitch is set for 2 p.m. with the Sunday finale getting underway at 12 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's games will be available online at GCU.tv.

Grand Canyon is 6-13 after losing a pair of weekday games at New Mexico this week. Austin Bull is the leading GCU hitter (.355). Garrison Schwartz has a team leading two home runs and is tied for the team lead in RBI's (13) with Ian Evans.

Righty Jake Wong (2-1, 1.41 ERA) is scheduled to start on Friday night against CSUB's Max Carter (3-0, 3.51 ERA). Wong leads the WAC in ERA.

On Saturday Lefty Jake Repavich (1-2, 4.26 ERA) is scheduled to start for GCU. Mahlik Jones (1-2, 4.34 ERA) could start for the 'Runners on Saturday or could slide over to a Sunday start.  Both teams have not confirmed a Sunday starter.

CSU Bakersfield (11-5) scored all eight runs against Nebraska Tuesday night with two outs as the Roadrunners came from behind to defeat the Cornhuskers 8-6. Trailing 6-4, the Roadrunners rallied in the bottom of the eighth.

After the first two CSUB batters were retired, Mark Pena reached on an infield single and advanced to third on an Andrew Penner single. David Metzgar's opposite field base hit to right plated Pena. Carter walked to load the bases. Nebraska closer Chad Luensmann balked in the tying run in Penner. He walked Ryan Grotjohn to load the bases again, setting the stage for Mahlik Jones who went down 0-2 in the count to Luensmann. Jones singled up the middle to score David Metzgar and Max Carter for the game winning runs.

Pena, Penner, and Jones each posted three hits for the Roadrunners who tallied 16 for the night. Metzgar, Carter, and Grotjohn each charted two hits. Grotjohn is now 7-for-8 at the plate dating back to last Sunday at UC Riverside. Jones drove in three runs.
