Box Score Las Cruces, N.M. – The CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team traveled to New Mexico State to open Western Athletic Conference play on Friday afternoon and they looked to get their second season off to a flying start. And to say they were successful at that is a huge understatement.
Just 36 seconds into the match, Junior
Aminah Settles scored her third goal of the season and it was a record breaker at that. Settles now owns CSUB's Division I record for career points and is tied in goals scored and she is only halfway through her junior year. To say she is going to rewrite the `Runners record books, well, that would be another understatement.
Settles record breaking goal was the only goal either team would score in the first half despite a very even game. The Aggies would outshoot the `Runners eight to seven for the half, both teams had three corners each and each team was offsides just once.
The `Runners came into WAC play on a four game losing streak and the early goal by Settles really gave this team a spark that they have been missing for the last few games.
In the 52
nd minute, freshman
Jordan Martinez scored her first collegiate goal to give the `Runners a 2-0 lead. It would be the type of play you would think of when you watch Martinez. The goal occurred because of hard work and her never give up attitude.
The Aggies cut the `Runners lead in half in the 82
nd minute on a goal by Aileen Galicia. Galicia would score her second of the game just six minutes later to tie the game at 2-2 and that is where we would be at the end of regulation. For Galicia, they were her fourth and fifth goals of the season.
Both teams had undefeated records heading into overtime. The `Runners were 3-0 and the Aggies 1-0 so far this year. CSUB had the better opportunities in overtime while outshooting the Aggies 6-2 in overtime, but this would end in a 2-2 tie.
"It's a game we feel like we threw away and has a touch of deja vu at the minute," said
Gary Curneen, Head Coach of the `Runners. "Credit to New Mexico State for coming back, but we had enough chances to win a WAC Tournament today, not just one game. Although it's disappointing, we are solely in control of our own destiny with these games and our response will be critical to the next one on Sunday."
The `Runners record is now 5-7-1 on the year and 0-0-1 in WAC play. The Aggies are 6-6-2 and 0-0-1 in the WAC.
CSUB travels to Edinburg, Texas to play UTRGV on Sunday, Oct. 8, with kickoff at 9 a.m. Pacific time.
