BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Roadrunner men's and women's track and field teams head into the second weekend of the outdoor season with a meet close to home. CSU Bakersfield will only have to travel to the east side of town for the Bakersfield College Relays Mar. 12.
“We're using this meet to test ourselves,” said Marcia Mansur-Wentworth, Director of Track and Field for CSUB. “We will be competing in various events to see how our student-athletes do in them.”
On the men's side, Tim Van Horn, Justin McKinley, and Joselito Flores will each compete in four events. The trio had success last week at the Cal Stata LA Invitational in the high jump. All three will try to jump over the bar again in Bakersfield while also taking on the long jump and triple jump and running in the 200-meter dash.
Also running for CSUB on Saturday will be senior Michael Lovato, who will tackle the 1500 and the 400, while redshirt freshman Gabe Gaeta will run in the 400 hurdles.
The 'Runner women will have a busy day, especially for senior Tricia Cervantes. Fresh off of a bronze medal in the WAC Indoor pentathlon, Cervantes will be taking on four events at the BC Relays in preparation for the heptathlon at the WAC Outdoor Championships in May. The native of Beaumont, Calif. will run in the 100 hurdles, compete in the long jump and high jump, and take on the shot put.
Junior Alisha Byrd and senior Audrena Harlan will join Cervantes in the long jump and the pair will both tackle the triple jump as well. Byrd will also run in the 100 hurdles this weekend while Harlan will run the flat 100-meter.
Sophomore Angel Valdez will attempt the 5000-meter race again while Taevionna Wilson will represent the 'Runners in the sprints. Wilson will attempt to lower her season-best time in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. The CSUB throwers for both the men and the women will not be competing this weekend.
The BC Relays is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning with events running all day long. Results and a full recap will be posted here at GoRunners.com when the results are made available.
