MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's men's and women's swimming teams wrapped up the A3 Performance Invitational with a final day of action in the pool on Saturday. The Roadrunners saw a CSUB Top 5 all-time mark by freshman Maddie Cosgrove while Lovre Soric continued to pace CSUB's men with strong swims.
“It was an amazing night,” said Chris Hansen, CSUB's Director of Swimming. “Lovre had another big night. Paola Hernandez, Sabrina Zavala, and Darya Samiee led the night for the women. We are pumped to go into training camp and start getting ready for the WAC Championships.”
Cosgrove cracked the CSUB Top 5 all-time list in the 200 fly on Saturday with a prelims time of 2:04.87. The native of San Diego, Calif. qualified for the finals 13th overall and finished 15th in the finals. Meanwhile, sophomore Lexi Cannon lowered her personal best in the event by half a second to qualify 20th and is now under two seconds outside of CSUB's Top 5.
A senior, Hernandez swam a season-best 50.88 in the prelims of the 100 free, a time just 0.43 seconds off of her personal best. She qualified sixth overall out of more than 100 women. In the A final, Hernandez finished seventh with a time of 51.30.
Hernandez also led the 'Runners with a lead-off leg of 51.32 in the 400 free relay. The 'Runner quartet of Hernandez, Cosgrove, Morgan King, and Alisa Cooke finished with a time of 3:28.84 in seventh place. The time was a season-best for any 'Runner relay squad by almost nine seconds.
Senior Dylana Milobar qualified 15th overall in the 200 breast with a prelims time of 2:21.51, a season-best mark. The native of Kamloops, B.C. finished 16th overall with a finals mark of 2:21.69. Zavala, a sophomore, finished 11th overall in the women's 1650 free. She posted a time of 17:15.56 in the event Saturday afternoon.
For the 'Runner men, Soric, a senior, posted a time of 1:49.32 in the 200 back prelims to qualify sixth overall. The native of Croatia lowered his time in the finals to 1:48.15, another season-best time, and placed fifth. Senior Luka Seles qualified 13th in the 200 fly with a season-best time of 1:52.16. A fellow Croatian, Seles placed 11th in the finals with a similar mark of 1:52.45.
Freshman Richie Campbell qualified for the 100 free finals and placed 17th overall with a finals time of 46.55. Jaren Hopkins and Joe Cobarrubias came in right behind their teammate at 46.78 and 47.00, respectively.
Sophomore Owen van Krimpen placed 12th in the finals of the mile with a time of 16:31.48. Junior Bryant Fascio was one place behind with a mark of 16:32.32 as the duo scored big points for the 'Runners.
After a slow start in the 200 breast prelims, sophomore Jake Chir improved his morning time by 12 seconds in the finals. Chir's time of 2:04.87 was a season-best and helped the native of Henderson, Nev. finish 10th overall.
The CSUB men finished the highly-competitive meet fifth of five teams with a three-day total of 696.5 points. The 'Runner women were ninth of ten teams with 361 points. For full results from the A3 Performance Invitational, open the linked PDF above.
CSU Bakersfield's fall portion of the season is now complete while only a select group of Roadrunners will travel to US Winter Nationals, Nov. 30 – Dec. 3. The rest of the 'Runners will recommence dual season in early January.
