BOISE, Idaho—Boise State defeated CSU Bakersfield 24-9 in the final Pac-12 dual of the regular season for the Roadrunners Friday night at Boise's Centennial High School. Six of the seven Broncos' wins were by five points or less.
The dual opened at 149 pounds where Coleman Hammond (R-Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) shutout Jake Valarde 4-0. Hammond tallied over two minutes of riding time in the match.
Steven Hernandez tied the match at 157 when he defeated Spencer Hill (R-Sr., Clovis, Calif., Fresno City College) 7-5. Adam Fierro (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) went down 5-2 in the third period to Chris Castillo. Fierro nearly pulled off the comeback, posting an escape with two seconds to go in the match, but Fierro fell 6-5 to Castillo.
With Bryce Hammond (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) out due to an injury at 174 pounds, Jesus Ambriz (R-Jr., Vista, Calif., Rancho Buena Vista HS) made his first dual start of the season against Austin Dewey. Each wrestler recorded an escape in regulation, sending the match to overtime. There was no score in the first two overtimes. In the third extra period, Dewey got an escape for a 2-1 victory and 9-3 Boise State dual lead.
The second consecutive overtime bout came at 184 pounds where Holden Packard took down Sean Pollock (R-Sr., Oceanside, Calif., Rancho Buena Vista HS) 20 seconds into the extra frame and earned a 6-4 decision. Matt Williams (R-Fr., Apple Valley, Calif., Sultana HS) got the 'Runners back on the board with a 4-1 victory over Cody Dixon at 197.
At heavyweight, Gaylen Edmo broke Alex Encarnarcion-Strand's (R-So., Concord, Calif., College Park HS) six-match winning streak as her earned a 6-2 victory. Carson Kuhn posted a 10-5 decision over Sergio Mendez (So., Arleta, Calif., San Fernando HS) at 125.
Ian Nickell (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) earned the final CSUB victory of the night when he defeated Michael Cook 6-0. No. 5 Geo Martinez pinned Timmy Box (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) 1:25 into the 141-pound match to conclude dual 24-9 in favor of Boise State (3-7, 1-4 Pac-12).
For the second consecutive week, the Roadrunners (6-4, 1-4 Pac-12) took part in a doubleheader with two of the top local high school wrestling teams. Prior to the CSUB-Broncos' dual, Centenni al High, the defending 5A Idaho state champion, hosted Kuna, the current 4A Idaho state champion.
