BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—The CSU Bakersfield wrestling team held the annual Blue-Gold Dual Saturday in the Icardo Center. The Gold team, captained by redshirt seniors Ian Nickell and Reuben Franklin defeated the Blue team 28-16.

The dual began at 125 pounds where Sergio Mendez put the Blue team up 6-0 with a pin of Kyle Anderson. Nickell got the Gold on the board with a 15-3 decision over Russell Rohlfing at 141. The Gold took the lead for good when Coleman Hammond posted a technical fall (16-1) against Jacob Thalin in the 149-pound bout.
AJ Fierro made it four in a row for the Gold with a 5-3 victory at 157 pounds. Bryce Hammond drew the Blue to within one-point when he needed only 1:40 to earn a technical fall over Matt Penyacesek. Jesus Ambriz and Dylan Bolinger went to overtime at 184 pounds before Ambriz earned a Gold victory, 5-2.
Reuben Franklin defeated Matt Williams 13-4 at 197 pounds. Alex Encarnarcion-Strand won by tech fall at heavyweight against Dominic Balmer. Herrera returned to pin Everett Pratt before Adam Fierro concluded the dual with a 8-5 victory over De La Riva at 165.
“The one thing that I can take away from tonight is that a lot of points were scored,” said CSUB head coach Mike Mendoza. “There was a lot of action on both sides. I think our freshmen looked good today. It was good to have this first match. Our guys came out hard, took it seriously and this will better prepare us for our first matches.”
The CSUB season begins Nov. 7 with the Appalachian State Mountaineer Duals. The Roadrunners face Gardner Webb, Anderson College, and Appalachian State. The duals begin at 10 a.m. (EST) in Boone, N.C. The first home dual for the Roadrunners comes on Nov. 20 when No. 1 Penn State comes to the Icardo Center for a 7 p.m. match. Tickets are available at Gorunners.com or by calling 661-654-BLUE.
