Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- Sunday, Oct. 11, was a day for the record books for CSU Bakersfield's women's soccer team. The Roadrunners tied or broke several school records in their 9-1 victory over Chicago State at the Main Soccer field. Haley Vicente and Aminah Settles led the way for CSUB with four and three goals, respectively.
After a double overtime loss to UMKC on Friday, Bakersfield's Head Coach Gary Curneen was worried that his team would come out flat against Chicago State on Sunday: “Friday was a disappointing one to lose it right at the end. I thought we dealt with that really well today by coming out focused and ready to go. Aminah's performance was impressive in the first half and Haley went out and bettered her by a goal in the second half. It's exciting for us.”
CSUB broke the scoring open in the 13th minute with Settles' first goal of the match and sixth of the season. Four and a half minutes later, the redshirt freshman had completed a natural hat trick with her third goal of the match. Settles became just the fifth Roadrunner in NCAA Division I history to score a hat trick on Sunday. The Tucson native also leads CSUB and the Western Athletic Conference in goal scoring. With eight goals on the season Settles is now tied for fifth in CSUB Division I history in career goals.
Senior Taylor Wheeler, who is now just seven appearances away from tying the CSUB all-time record with 79 matches played, netted the fourth goal of the match for CSUB. The native of Fullerton converted on a pass from Max Langenberg in the 30th minute to makes the score 4-0 Bakersfield.
Vicente earned her second goal of the season and first of the match at 31:00 when she stole the ball just outside the Cougars' box and finished past the CSU keeper. Two minutes later, a nice give and go with sophomore Kelly Mitchell set Vicente up for her second of the match.
After halftime, Chicago State earned its only goal of the match when Jyllian Coggins converted in the 56th minute. The sophomore's goal was her second of the season as she now leads the team in goals.
90 seconds later, Vicente joined Settles in the hat trick club with her third. The Las Vegas native took a free kick after a foul from 25 yards out. Vicente's strike flew true and the freshman put the 'Runners ahead 7-1.
In the 60th minute, Vicente received a ball in the box from Tori VandeHoef and finished with a nice flick over the keeper. Vicente's fourth goal of the match tied an all-time CSUB record with three other 'Runners (Taykar Sklar, 2006; Nicole Van Dyke, 2000; Jamie Simpson, 1997).
Madi Giammona joined the goal scorers in the 74th minute as CSUB scored its ninth and final goal. Freshman Shelby Johnson, playing in her first match of the year, played a through ball to Giammona who finished in the opposite corner to close out the 9-1 victory.
Alexa Orrante, Giammona, and Sabrina Delgado each added an assist for the 'Runners on Sunday morning while CSUB tied the all-time record for assists in a match with seven. Redshirt senior Tori Ornela earned her fifth victory of the season and is now just three shy of the CSUB Division I record for career wins (20). Jen Padilla played the second half in goal for CSUB, making her first collegiate save and allowing just one goal in 45 minutes played.
On the day, the 'Runners broke or tied a handful of records including Vicente's four goals in a match. CSUB also tied the all-time school record for team goals in a match with nine, broke the all-time record for points in a match with 25, and had two players with a hat trick in the same match for the first time in school history.
After the perfect storm of goals, the Roadrunners (5-7-2, 3-1-1 WAC) head into the toughest week of the season full of confidence. CSUB hits the road for a pair of matches away from Bakersfield. The 'Runners will first face defending WAC Tournament Champion Seattle U Oct. 16 before closing the weekend at current WAC leader Utah Valley Oct. 18.
