'Runners Defeat Sac State For Kernen's 400th Win

Box Score

MESA, Ariz.-Taylor Aikenhead (Sr., Lancaster, Calif., Bakersfield College) tossed a complete game seven-hitter as Bakersfield (26-31) defeated the No. 1 seed, Sacramento State (35-22) 4-1 Thursday night in round two of the WAC Baseball Tournament at Cubs Park.

With the victory, Roadrunner head coach Bill Kernen picks up his win No. 400 in his career. Kernen improves to 400-326-3 for his career which will conclude after the 2014 season as he announced his retirement May 8. Aikenhead needed only 107 pitches for fifth complete game of the season. The 6-0 lefty struck out two, walked one, and got 12 fly ball outs and 11 ground ball outs.

Soloman Williams (Jr., Long Beach, Calif., Golden West College) opened the scoring with his sixth home run of the year with one out in the top of the fourth. The blast traveled an estimated 400 feet. Chris Lewis, a .181 hitter coming into the game, opened the Sac State fifth with his second hit of the night, a single to left. Dane Fujinaka's sacrifice bunt pushed Lewis to second. Brandon Hunley, the Hornets' No. 9 batter, hit a ball up the middle, but Roadrunner shortstop Oscar Sanay (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) dove to his glove side, came up with the ball and threw Hunley out as Lewis moved to third. Kyle Moses, the Sac State leadoff hitter, hit a flare into short left that Sanay caught over his left shoulder to end the inning.

Max Carter's (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) two-out RBI single in the top of the sixth plated Williams for a 2-0 Bakersfield lead.  With one out in the seventh, Lewis doubled to the left center gap to score Scotty Burcham to make it a 2-1 game. Bakersfield loaded the bases with one out in the ninth for Sanay.  Sac State starter Brennan Leitao got Sanay to fly out to center. David Metzgar (Fr., Lancaster, Calif., Paraclete HS) smacked a double up the middle to score a pair for CSUB.

Will Soto singled to right with one out in the ninth, but Aikenhead got Burcham to ground into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Sanay went 3-for-5 out of the 'Runner leadoff spot. Williams improved to 6-for-7 in the tournament with his second consecutive three-hit performance. Carter tallied two hits.

Jordie Hein (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) stole his 17th base of the season in the top of the third, reset the school record for most stolen bases in a season. Hein was tied with Ryan McIntyre who stole 16 during the 2009 season.  Mylz Jones (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) had his 20-game hitting streak stopped by Leiato as he went 0-for-5.

With the win, Bakersfield, the No. 4 seed, plays at 7 p.m. Friday night against Utah Valley in the winner's bracket. The Wolverines, the third seed, defeated No. 2 Texas-Pan American 9-2 earlier on Thursday night.
