Box Score FRESNO, Calif.--Manny Argomaniz homered twice for Fresno State (26-25) as the Bulldogs defeated Bakersfield 8-4 (23-29) in the final non-conference game of 2014 for the Roadrunners.
The first four Bulldogs reached base in the bottom of the first, capped off by Taylor Ward's two-RBI single. Helped by a double play, Hayden Carter (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Vista HS), the 'Runners starter, settled in and got the next three outs.
Mylz Jones (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) extended his hitting streak to 16 to lead off of the fourth. He scored the first CSUB run of the game on an Allen Gwynn (R-Sr., Santa Paula, Calif., Ventura College) single with one out in the frame. The Bulldogs scored two in the bottom of the fourth to increase the lead, the final run coming on Argomaniz's first home run, a solo shot.
Argomaniz smacked a two-run home run with two outs in the sixth. Jordan Luplow hit a two-run home run in the seventh. The Roadrunners loaded the bases wth two outs in the eighth, but Derick Velasquez, the fifth Fresno State pitcher of the night, struck Gwynn out to end the inning.
The Bulldogs brought in their closer, Jake Shull to start the ninth. The Roadrunners responded by getting the first three batters of the frame on to load the bases. Max Carter (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) flew out to right, but it wasn't deep enough to score a run. Nick Rogowski (Jr., Woodbridge, Va., Cypress College) also flew out to right, but again, CSUB couldn't plate a runner. Soloman Williams (Jr., Long Beach, Calif., Golden West College) cleared the bases with a double to bring up Jones. Jones reached on an infield single. Garrett Pierce (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) grounded out for the final out of the night.
Oscar Sanay (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS), Jones, and Williams both had three hits to lead CSUB. The Roadrunners outhit Fresno State 11-9 for the game. Hayden Carter took the loss, pitching the first fourth innings.
The Roadrunners complete the regular season with a three-game WAC series at Seattle U beginning Thursday night at 6 p.m.
