Box Score FRESNO, Calif.--No. 20 Oregon (5-3) defeated Bakersfield (5-3) 3-0 in the first match of the Fresno State Classic Friday night.
The Ducks took set one 25-23. The Roadrunners went down 23-21 before coming back to tie it at 23 on a Debora Araujo (Sr.,Belo Horizonte, Brazil (Western Nebraska C.C.). The Ducks would win the set on two unforced 'Runner errors. The second set featured seven ties. With the score knotted up at 21, the Ducks scored four of the next five points to win the set 25-22. Oregon won the final set 25-18 as the Ducks broke the from the third tie of the set to go on a 6-2 run that pushed the momentum in favor of Oregon.
"Our team came out and put service pressure on Oregon right away," said Bakersfield head coach Jolene Shepardson.
Araujo led the 'Runners with 14 kills. Fernanda Gonçalves (Sr.,Belo Horizonte, Brazil (Western Nebraska C.C.) dished out 35 assists while Mariah Alvidrez (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) had 13 digs.
"I'm proud of how we represented ourselves tonight," Shepardson said. "This is something we can build off of in going into a competitive day against Fresno and Belmont."
The Roadrunners take on the host Bulldogs Saturday at 12 p.m. and the Bruins at 5 p.m. to conclude tournament play.
