GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas--The Western Athletic Conference released its 2013 all-WAC baseball teams and postseason awards as selected by the league's head coaches Mar 21. CSU Bakersfield junior infielder Tyler Shryock was named the Player of the Year and Bakersfield senior Jeff McKenzie earned Pitcher of the Year honors. CSU Bakersfield's Bill Kernen was named WAC Coach of the Year.
Shryock, a junior from Tehachapi, Calif. (Desert Christian HS), batted .362 in conference play and led the WAC with 42 hits. He also earned first team all-WAC honors. Shryock is 10th in Division I this season in hits with 85 and leads CSUB in hitting.
McKenzie, a senior from El Dorado Hills, Calif. (San Joaquin Delta College), earned the WAC's Pitcher of the Year award. McKenzie, a first team All-Conference selection, made nine starts during conference play, registering a 1.97 ERA. He recorded an 8-1 record during conference play with 56 strikeouts. He also completed three of his WAC games and was named WAC Pitcher of the Week four times. Overall, McKenzie is second in Division I in victories with 12 (12-2).
Kernen led the Roadrunners to a 18-9 league mark and a share of the conference championship (with UT Arlington) in the 'Runners first season in the league. Kernen's 'Runners won a school record 35 games (35-20) in 2013.
Also earning first team All-Conference honors for Bakersfield were Scott Brattvet (P, Sr., Trabuco Canyon, Calif., Santa Ana College), Cael Brockmeyer (C, Jr., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS), and Oscar Sanay (2B, Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS). Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) was chosen second team All-Conference.
The final award which was presented during the WAC Tournament Banquet Tuesday was was freshman of the year which was won by Sacramento State's Chris Lewis.
The Roadrunners open the WAC Tournament Wednesday against San Jose State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. (PDT).
