SAN JOSE, Calif.—Dane Lund's infield single with the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to gave San Jose State (16-37, 10-15 WAC) a 2-1 victory over Bakersfield (34-20, 17-8 WAC) in the league series opener Friday night at Municipal Stadium.
Nick Schultz singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth for San Jose State and moved to second on a wild pitch. With the count 2-0, Jacob Valdez flew out to center for the second out. Sheldon Daquioag singled to left to tie the score. Taylor Aikenhead (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) relieved CSUB starter Jeff McKenzie (Sr., El Dorado Hills, Calif., San Joaquin Delta College) to face Tim Quiery. Daquioag stole second before Aikenhead walked Quiery. Ricky Acosta walked to load the bases Daquioag came home on Lund's gamewinning RBI.
Tyler Shryock (Jr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) plated Kevin Younger (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) in the top of the fifth for the lone CSUB run.
CSUB stranded 10 runners on base, compared to 5 for the Spartans. Sanay went 3-for-5, the 22nd time this season he has recorded at least two hits in a game. Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) recorded his 19th multiple hit game of the year, going 2-for-4. Mercurio had two hits. McKenzie lost for only the second time this season (12-2).
Bakersfield can clinch at least a share of the WAC regular season title and the No. 1 seed at next weekend's WAC Tournament with one win this weekend. The Roadrunners are one game ahead of UT Arlington, a 3-2 winner over Sacramento State Friday afternoon. If Bakersfield and Arlington end the regular season in a tie, the Roadrunners own the tiebreaker (head-to-head play).
The series continues Saturday at 1 p.m. in San Jose.
