DAVIS, Calif.--UC Davis (7-9) scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat CSU Bakersfield (10-5) 3-2 Sunday afternoon in the final game of the three-game series at Robbins Stadium.
CSUB scored the first run of the game in the third inning, moving two runners into scoring position with one out before Oscar Sanay's (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) sacrifice fly to right field scored Kevin Younger (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS). UC Davis tied the game in the fifth off Tanner Bily's double to left center that scored Cameron Olson with one out.
The Roadrunners put runners at second and third against Davis starter Evan Wolf in the eighth inning, loaded the bases on a walk against reliever Patrick Hennessey, and then scored the go-ahead run when Tyler Shryock (Jr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) hit a sacrifice fly to right off reliever Max Cordy. Cordy struck out Sanay to end the threat.
Tino Lipson's leadoff walk in the eighth off of CSUB closer Dylan Christensen (Sr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Saddleback College) gave UC Davis a chance. Paul Politi later bounced a one-out single through the left side, putting Lipson at third, while first baseman Nick Lynch's sacrifice fly to short center two batters later was enough to bring Lipson across with the tying runn.
A walk to Olson loaded the bases, while another walk by Christensen- this one to Kevin Barker - plated Politi with the eventual winning run. Cordy retired the Roadrunners in order in the ninth for the Aggies' victory.
CSUB starter Jonathan Montoya (Sr., Chino Hills, Calif., Chino Hills HS) and Christensen limited the Aggies to six hits. Montoya went seven innings, his longest stint (84 pitches) since returning from Tommy John Surgery. Davis pitchers, which gave up 23 to CSUB the day before, allowed just five on Sunday.
The Roadrunners return home for five games next week, beginning Tuesday night when CSUB hosts UNLV at 6 p.m.
