BAKERSFIELD,
Calif.—Three Hofstra pitchers
combined on a four-hitter as the Pride defeated CSU Bakersfield 1-0 Friday
night at Hardt Field.
The Pride walked three times in the top of the first but
could only take a 1-0 lead as CSUB starter Jeff McKenzie (Sr., El
Dorado Hills, Calif., San Joaquin
Delta College) got out of the jam, getting Matt Reistetter to ground out to
short to end the inning.
Hofstra starter Joe Burg pitched out of CSUB threats in the
second, third, and fifth. The Roadrunners stranded runners in scoring position
in the second and fifth and left the bases loaded in the third.
CSUB used the hidden ball trick in the top of the fifth to
get out of trouble. With one out Robbie Cafiero doubled. As he led off second,
CSUB shortstop Tyler Shryock (Jr., Tehachapi,
Calif., Desert Christian HS)
tagged him out.
The Roadrunner scoring chance in the eighth saw Shryock
reached on an infield single with one out. Oscar Sanay (Jr., Chula
Vista, Bonita Vista HS) singled up the middle to bring up Cael
Brockmeyer (Jr., Vineyard Haven, Mass.,
Avon Old Farms HS). Pride reliever Brett Schriber struck out the 6-5 catcher.
Dylan Christensen (Sr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Saddleback
College) would ground
into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Bryan Verbitsky got the first two outs of the ninth in
relief of Schrieber. Garrett Pierce
(So., Bakersfield, Calif.,
Centennial Hs) singled to center to bring up Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif.,
Paraclete HS) who flew out to center to end the game.
The teams would combine to leave 17 on base (nine for CSUB, eight
for Hofstra).
Hofstra (1-4) and CSU Bakersfield (2-2) continues Saturday
with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
