BAKERSFIELD,
Calif.—CSU Bakersfield scored six
runs in seventh and eighth innings to power their Roadrunners past USC 9-4 at
Hardt Field Saturday afternoon.
Greg Zebrack's two-run home run in the top of the third
keyed a three-run spurt for the Trojans, resulting in the first scores of the
day. RBI's from Oscar Sanay (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS), Chance Gusbeth (Fr., Lancaster, Calif., Desert
Christian HS), and Dylan Christensen (Sr., Rancho Santa
Margarita, Calif., Saddleback College) tied the score in the bottom of
the third.
Gusbeth recorded the first hit for the Roadrunners since the
third in the bottom of the seventh to give CSUB (2-0) baserunners at first and
second with two outs. Christensen walked to load the bases to bring up Kevin
Younger (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) who walked on four
straight pitches off of USC reliever Kyle Davis for a 4-3 Roadrunner advantage.
Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) walked off the second
Trojan reliever of the inning, Matt Munson with the bases loaded for his first
RBI.Zebrack struck again in the eighth, doubling in Dante Flores to cut the CSUB
lead to one. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, a Cael
Brockmeyer (Jr., Vineyard Haven Mass., Avon Old Farms
HS) cleared the bases for the Roadrunners. Christensen added an RBI single
later in the inning.
Sanay was 2-for-2, hit by a pitch twice, and walked. Jordie
Hein (So., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS), and Brockmeyer both
had two hits. The Roadrunners took advantage of 10 USC (0-2) walks (one off the
CSUB school record).
CSUB starting pitcher Scott Brattvet (Sr., Trabuco
Canyon, Calif., Santa Ana College)
retired 13 of the last 14 Trojans he faced. Brattvet struck out eight over the
first seven innings. Taylor Aikenhead (Jr., Lancaster,
Calif., Bakersfield College)
relieved Brattvet in the eighth and earned the save with two innings of work.
For the second day in a row, a record crowd saw CSUB play
baseball. Attendance for Saturday's game was 1,301. The Roadrunners host No. 22
Cal State Fullerton Sunday at 2 p.m.
