Box Score OMAHA, Neb.- A career-high 29 points from Issiah Grayson (R-Sr., Atlanta, Ga., Southern Idaho CC) paced a frantic late second-half comeback attempt for the Roadrunners but it wasn't enough as the Omaha Mavericks closed out the 93-88 victory over CSUB Tuesday night at Ralston Arena.
The loss was the fourth straight for Bakersfield (5-5), who trailed by 18 points with 6:30 remaining. As was the case two weeks ago in Fresno, the Roadrunners mounted another comeback, cutting the deficit to three points with just 26 seconds remaining. The Mavericks would extend the lead to four with a free throw from Alex Phillips before the Roadrunners missed their last three-point attempt with seven seconds remaining.
“They're (Omaha) a team where when they get you down like that their free-throw shooting and guard play is too good to come out of a hole like that,” said head coach Rod Barnes. “I was proud of our guys for making the run and coming back like that but it was one of those situations where you know it's an uphill battle .”
Grayson was 10-of-16 from the field and 5-of-9 from three-point range in the loss. He also set a new career high with field goal attempts and field goals made.
Brandon Barnes (R-Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Lipscomb) added 17 points on 8-of-12 from the floor while Javonte Maynor (R-Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Georgia State) added 11 for CSUB. Bakersfield shot well all night converting on 31-of-60 attempts from the floor (51.7%) and 13-of-27 from three-point range (48.1%) but allowed Omaha to shoot 49% from the field and 50% in the second half from three-point range.
The Roadrunners battled back from a first-half deficit to lead by four on two occasions; the last with 1:41 to play. That's when a foul was called on Aly Ahmed (So., Alexandria, Egypt, Midland CC), following a video replay an additional technical foul was called on Ahmed. Omaha made two of three free throws to tie the game, then Caleb Steffensmeier hit a three-pointer with 51 seconds remaining. Following a CSUB miss CJ Carter capped off the half with a three-pointer as well to give the Mavericks a 46-39 halftime lead. It was an 11-0 run following the technical on Ahmed.
“We're having spurts right now where we're not playing well in the second half and we have to fix that,” Barnes said. “Second game in a which we've fallen behind in the second half, this game we did mount a comeback but too little, too late.”
Omaha then scored the first four points of the second half to build the double-digit lead they would hold for much of the second half before the Roadrunners made their late run.
CJ Carter led Omaha with 20 points, John Karhoff added 18 for the Mavericks (7-3).
Bakersfield returns to action Sunday night taking on USC at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 P.M.
