Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- Zach Lamb (R-Sr., Norcross, Ga., Miami-Dade CC) and Javonte Maynor (R-Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Georgia State) didn't score a single point in Bakersfield's third win of the season on Monday, but Saturday night the guard duo combined for 31 of CSUB's 71 points as the Roadrunners won their fourth-straight 71-69 over Idaho State (2-2) Saturday night at the Icardo Center.
The Bengals and 'Runners traded rallies all game long with both teams taking the momentum and the lead in a game that saw 13 lead changes and nine ties. Bakersfield again showcased their versatility by breaking through the Bengals' zone defense and playing tough defense themselves to improve to 4-1 for the second time under head coach Rod Barnes.
“I'm encouraged by this team because we've had guys not playing well like Brandon (Barnes) Javonte (Maynor) and Zach Lamb and those guys stepped up and played big for us tonight,” Barnes said. “I thought our guys just hung in there…the last few years we would have lost that game; but it's a big win for us, a character win for us.”
The Roadrunners, sparked by a 7-10 performance from Maynor from the outside built a 43-36 lead at halftime but the Bengals started the second half on a 10-1 run to recapture the lead. That's when Barnes brought Lamb into the contest to run the point guard spot, he went on to score seven second-half points and bring the 'Runners back into the game on 4-of-7 from the field. Lamb, who injured his back in just one minute of play against Nevada on Monday, had no problems putting the team on his back during a critical stretch in the second half.
“I was searching for some veteran guys to come in and step up for us and Zach did a great job getting out there and getting us some composure,” Barnes said. “He's a very confident kid and once we moved him to the point our confidence and expectations went up at a time when they made a 10-1 run.”
Lamb's effort was complimented by the three-point shooting of Maynor who tied a career-record with seven made three-pointers, a feat he also accomplished in a road loss last season at Sacramento State. Maynor's 21 points were also a career-second best after his 23 at Sac State a season ago. Maynor gave CSUB the lead for good with 6:52 to play with his final three-pointer to give the 'Runners a one-point advantage at 58-57. CSUB then went on a 7-0 run capped by back-to-back shots under the basket by Brandon Barnes who finished with 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting.
Idaho State however continued to battle as they had all night, cutting the lead to two points at 68-66 with 1:12 remaining following a free-throw from center Ayibakuro Preh. After a Maynor miss on the next possession and an Idaho State timeout, Bakersfield's Corey Hall (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Ventura CC) forced a turnover by pressuring Preh on the wing who then threw the ball out of bounds trying to find Evann Hall on the far sideline.
Following a foul by the Bengals, Tyrell Corbin (Jr., Columbia, S.C., Salt Lake City CC) hit two free throws to stretch the lead to four for Bakersfield. Andre Hatchett missed the next layup for Idaho State and Hall pulled down the rebound and was fouled. He sank one of two free throws to give the 'Runners a 71-66 advantage with just four seconds to play. Chris Hansen, who led Idaho State with 19 points, then hit a buzzer-beating half-court shot but it wasn't enough as the 'Runners earned the two-point victory.
CSUB shot 50% from the field (24-48) and 47% from three-point range (10-21) in the win. The 'Runners did turn the ball over a season-high 21 times which led to 21 Bengal points in the game but CSUB also managed 18 turnovers from the Bengals and converted 24 points off those turnovers in the win.
Stefon Johnson (R-Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio, Gardner-Webb)set a Bakersfield Division I and tied a Bakersfield all-time record with six blocks in the game while also dishing out five assists.
