Roadrunners Battle Past Idaho

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--The Bakersfield volleyball team rallied from a poor serving first set to defeat Idaho 3-1 Saturday night in the Icardo Center.

Seven service errors and seven hitting errors led to 14 of the 25 Vandals' points in the first set as Idaho took the opener 25-23. The Roadrunner defense held the Vandals to .067 hitting percentage in the second set as Bakersfield bounced back to a 25-17 victory. Both teams hit under .200 in set three, but Bakersfield used a 9-3 run late in the set to earn a 25-17 win.

The fourth set featured 12 ties and four lead changes. With the score tied at 22, Debora Araujo (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) recorded back-to-back kills for a 24-22 lead. Katelyn Peterson made it 24-23 with a kill, but Araujo's kill on ensuing Roadrunner offensive attack ended the match in favor of the Roadrunners 25-23.

Araujo tallied her ninth double-double of the year with 22 kills and 11 digs. Araujo hit .349 for the match (22-7-43). Bakersfield setter Fernanda Gonçalves (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) earned her 11th double-double of the season with 50 assists and 13 digs.

Kelsee Sawyer (So., Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) had 13 kills, six digs, and two blocks. Molly O'Hagan (Jr., Tonganoxie, Kan., Tonganoxie HS) had 12 kills and a .321 hitting percentage (12-3-28). Mariah Alvidrez (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) recorded a match high 18 digs.

The victory was the sixth in a row for the 'Runners (15-9), the longest for the program at the Division I level. The victory gives Bakersfield a 7-3 league mark and moves the team into sole possession of third place in the WAC. Idaho (13-9) falls to 6-4 in the league and into a tie for fifth with Kansas City.

"We came out tonight unfocused resulting in to many unforced errors," said Bakersfield head coach Jolene Shepardson. "Once we settled down, we were able to execute our game plan. I am proud of our team's maturity, especially in the fourth set. We stayed patient at 22-22, and continued to make plays."

The Roadrunners conclude an eight-game homestand with a 7-1 record. Bakersfield is at Kansas City Thursday for a 7 p.m. (CDT) start.
