BAKERSFIELD,
Calif. — Winning eight of 10 bouts, the CSU Bakersfield wrestling team
rolled to its third straight dual victory with a 26-7 win over Cal Baptist in
non-conference action on Saturday in the Old Gym at CSUB.
CSUB
125-pounder Miguel Comparan (R-Sr., Buena Park, Calif., Buena Park HS) turned
in the most thrilling win of the day with a 6-4 overtime victory over Tyler
Hall. In his usual come-from-behind fashion, Comparan, who was trailing Hall
3-0 with 10 seconds remaining in regulation, recorded two takedowns in the
final seconds to force an extra period. Using his newly-gained momentum,
Comparan needed only 20 seconds in overtime to post another takedown and win
the match 6-4.
"When
we wrestle a team like Cal Baptist, we expect to do well," said CSUB head coach
Mike Mendoza. "I think we could have wrestled a little better in some of the matches,
but some guys really wrestled well today. With Miguel coming back at 125s, that
was a great win. That's real typical of how he wrestles and, as a senior he
knows exactly how to work that style and he does it every time. The same thing
with Tyler Iwamura, he knows his style and he is pretty consistent with how he
wrestles. Some of the freshman could have done a little better, but it was a
good win.
The
Roadrunners (7-3) got two major decisions against Cal Baptist (5-10) with
CSUB's 157-pounder Adam Fierro (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS)
defeating Alec Smith 9-1 to start the match and CSUB's 174-pounder Bryce Hammond (R-Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) beating Ken Tribble 10-1.
Also
recording wins for CSUB were David Meza (R-Fr., Fullerton, Calif., Buena Park
HS), who beat Anthony Ballinger 10-4, at 165 pounds; Sean Pollock (R-So.,
Oceanside, Calif., Rancho Buena Vista HS), who topped Paul Head 8-5, at 184
pounds; Frankie Hurtado (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS), who edged David
Dill 9-7, at 197 pounds; Tyler Iwamura (R-Sr., San Diego, Calif., Santa Fe
Christian HS), who defeated Dakota Thayer 6-4, at 133 pounds; and Timmy Box
(R-Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS), who downed Bradford Geri 14-11,
at 141 pounds.
Up
next, the 'Runners will return to Pac-12 action at Boise State on Feb. 1. The
meet is one of three Pac-12 duals remaining on CSUB's schedule, which includes
a showdown at Oregon State on Feb. 2 and a home contest against Stanford on
Feb. 10.
"We
have some big duals coming up that are going to be a lot tougher," Mendoza
said. "A lot of these guys were trying things out today and it's good to see
them do that in competition at any level."
