No. 17 NC State Takes Two From CSUB

RALEIGH, N.C.--No. 17 North Carolina State (33-12) swept a doubleheader from CSU Bakersfield (19-23) Sunday afternoon at Doak Field.

In the first game, Spenser Messmore (Sr., Granada Hills, Calif., Alemany HS) allowed two runs with two outs in the third inning following four straight hits from the Wolfpack including Ryan Mathews two-RBI double off the center field wall to score the game's only runs. Messmore would settle down from that point forward but the Roadrunners stranded six baserunners including four in scoring position as they were shut out for the fifth time this season 2-0 by NC State.

Kyle Desimone (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) led the Roadrunners with two hits and a stolen base but was stranded at third base on two occasions. Dessimone started at second base for the sixth time this season as Oscar Sanay (So., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) started at shortstop as Tyler Shryock (So., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) dealt with illness.

CSUB loaded the bases with one out in the 8th inning before the Wolfpack ended the threat by getting Cael Brockmeyer (So,. Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) to hit into a double play. CSUB managed just six hits in the game while NC State scored two runs on nine hits. Messmore took the loss to fall to 3-4 on the season while Ethan Ogburn improved to 4-2 on the season pitching 7 1/3 innings and striking out nine.

The Wolfpack defeated the Roadrunners 10-7 in the nightcap. CSUB led 5-1 after four and half before scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. With the Wolfpack leading 7-5 in the seventh, the Roadrunners tied the score. A Desimone RBI double scored Dylan Christensen (Jr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Saddleback College) before Andrew Letourneau (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) tied the game with a triple that plated Desimone.

The Wolfpack scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the victory. NC State's Danny Canela, Andrew Ciencin, and Brett Austin all drove in runs during the rally.

Ciencin was 3-for-4 with four RBI's in the game to pace NC State. Desimone charted career highs for hits in a game (3) and RBI's (3) in a game for the Roadrunners. Letourneau, Kevin Younger (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS), and Sanay each posted two hits.

CSUB concludes its 11-game road trip next weekend at Cal Poly beginning Friday night at 6 p.m.
