BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - CSU Bakersfield center fielder Laura King (R-Jr., Camarillo, Calif., UNLV) led off the seventh inning with a double and came around to score on an error to lift the the Roadrunner softball team to a 4-3 victory over San Diego in the Game 1 of Sunday's Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader at Roadrunner Softball Complex. The Toreros won Game 2, 5-0, to win the weekend series 3-1 after winning both of Saturday's games.
In Game 1, CSUB (8-25, 1-3 PCSC), playing as the designated visitor despite being the home team due to PCSC rules, took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when sophomore shortstop Myshayla Fryer (San Diego, Calif., University HS) hit an RBI double to score freshman second baseman Adrianna Cardoza (Santa Anna, Calif., La Quinta HS) and senior pinch hitter Tera Macias (Los Banos, Calif., San Jose CC) hit an RBI infield single to score senior first baseman Sara Smith (Northridge, Calif., Biola Univ.).
The Toreros (16-12, 3-1 PCSC) tied the game up in the bottom of the frame, but the 'Runners reclaimed the lead in the fifth when sophomore pitcher/designated player Taylor DeSilva (Sunnyvale, Calif., Univ. of the Pacific) singled and then came around to score on another RBI hit by Fryer.
San Diego once again tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth, but CSUB took the lead for good when King doubled and then was moved to third on a single by DeSilva. DeSilva then took off to steal second and San Diego catcher Taylor Hensley's throw went into center field, allowing King to score the winning run. Sophomore pitcher Sarah Hoag (Salinas, Calif., Monterey HS) was credited with the win after entering the game in the sixth inning and throwing two scoreless innings with one strikeout.
In Game 2, San Diego pitcher Cassidy Coleman held the 'Runners to three hits and struck out nine in the complete-game victory. King had two of those hits, while junior left fielder Karlee Rodgers (Clovis, Calif., Clovis West HS) added a double. San Diego got all five of its runs in the fifth inning when Lauren Tomey, Morgan Kurtz and Caitlin Rooney each hit home runs.
CSUB will return to PCSC action with another back-to-back doubleheader home series against Loyla Marymount on Friday and Saturday at Roadrunner Softball Complex. Game 1 will start at noon both days.
