LAS VEGAS, Nev.—Danny Higa's infield single in the bottom of the eighth scored TJ White for the gamewinning run as UNLV (4-4) defeated CSU Bakersfield (4-4) 4-3 Tuesday night.
The Rebels took the lead in the first when Brandon Bayardi's sacrifice fly scored Trevor Kirk. UNLV went up 2-0 in the second on a Scott Tomasseti RBI ground out in the second. Stuart Smith (R-Jr. Ventura, Calif., Buena HS) tied the game in the third with a single that plated two runs. Smith put the 'Runners ahead 3-2 in the fifth with a triple that plated Oscar Sanay (So., San Diego, Calif., Bonita Vista HS). UNLV tied the game for the second time on the night when Tomasseti singled to left center to drive in Mark Shannon.
White opened the bottom of the eighth with a double to right center off of CSUB reliever James Barragan (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS). Marvin Campbell's grounder to second moved White to third with one out. Mark Shannon grounded out to first, but White could not advance. Tomasseti walked to put runners on the corners, setting the stage for Higa's gamewinner.
With one out in the ninth and working against Rebels' closer Zach Hartman , Jordie Hein (Fr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chaparral HS) singled to right followed by a Kevin Younger (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) single to left. Sanay singled to right to load the bases. Sanay's hit brought CSUB cleanup hitter Cael Brockmeyer (So., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) to the plate. Hartman induced Brockmeyer to pop out to second for out No. 2. Smith grounded out to first to end the game.
Sanay had three hits. Sanay and Louis Cazares (Sr., El Cajon, Calif., San Diego City College) each posted two hits. Chuck Buchanan (R-Jr., Las Vegas, Nev., Allan Hancock College) started on the hill for the 'Runners and the 6-4 lefty went six innings, giving up five hits and striking out three.
The series concludes Wednesday with first pitch set for 2:05 p.m.
