CSU Bakersfield Defeats UC Davis 7-4

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield (4-3) defeated UC Davis (5-2) 7-4 in the final game of the three-game series between the two teams Sunday afternoon at Hardt Field.

With Davis leading in the first Cael Brockmeyer (So., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) put the Roadrunners into the lead with a two-run home run. The Aggies scored runs in the fourth and the fifth to take the lead into the bottom of the sixth when Brockmeyer's infield single plated Jordie Hein (Fr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chaparral HS) tied the game.

With one out, Stuart Smith (R-Jr., Ventura, Calif., Buena HS) smacked a sacrifice fly to left to score Kevin Younger (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) to return the advantage to CSUB. The Roadrunners added three runs in the eighth as Dylan Christensen (Jr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Saddleback College) recorded his first hit of the season, a single up the middle which drove in Younger. Smith hit his first home run since 2010, a two-run blast to right, to make it 7-3.

A CSUB error led to a UC Davis run in the top of the ninth. With two outs and the tying run at the plate, Roadrunners' starter Taylor Aikenhead (So., Lancaster, Calif., Bakersfield College) got Paul Politi to fly out to center to end the game and give the 6-0 lefty his second consecutive complete game. Aikenhead scattered nine hits among his 119 pitches, striking out four, and walking one. Only two of the runs he gave up were earned.

Brockmeyer, Hein, and Younger each posted two hits. Hein and Younger both scored two runs. David Popkins, who went 9-for-12 in the first two games of the series was held without a hit in three at-bats. He did drive in a run with a sacrifice fly. Politi and Kevin Barker both posted three hits.

CSUB travels to UNLV for a two-game series beginning Tuesday night at 6:05 p.m.
