SAN JOSE, Calif.
- Despite out-hitting San Jose State 9-8, the CSU Bakersfield softball
team fell to the Spartans 6-3 in the second game of Saturday's non-league
doubleheader after dropping the first game 9-1 at SJSU Field.
The 'Runners (3-8) split with
the Spartans (7-8) on Friday, winning the first game 4-1 before falling 4-3 in the
second.
CSUB battled in Game 2,
rallying back to tie the game at 3-all in the top of the third inning, but the
Spartans pinned up two runs in the bottom of the frame and added an insurance
run in the fourth inning to seal the win and take the season series 3-1.
Center fielder Laura King (R-Jr., Camarillo, Calif., UNLV) had a great day at the plate for CSUB,
combining for four hits and two runs scored with one stolen base in both games.
CSUB first-year head coach Crissy Buck said she is proud of how the 'Runners
are progressing this season.
"When it comes to
growing and changing and becoming better, which is what we are talking about
this season, we are doing that every single day," Buck said. "You won't always
see it on the scoreboard and in terms of wins and losses, but we are becoming a
very tough opponent. I am very happy with how the team is coming together and
how they pulled together all weekend long."
Despite out-hitting the
Spartans in Game 2, the Roadrunners struggled to bring runners home by leaving
10 on base compared to San Jose State's three. Left fielder Karissa Veiga (So.,
Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) went 2-for-3 with a walk, third baseman Amy Ricciardi
(So., Chino Hills, Ayala HS) went 2-for-4, first baseman Sara Smith (Sr.,
Northridge, Calif., Biola Univ.) singled and had two RBIs and designated player
Emily Bliss (R-Jr., Northridge, Calif., Chaminade Prep) added a hit and a run.
In Game 1, the Spartans
jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning and added on with a four-spot in the second
on their way to a five-inning victory. After King singled in the second inning
for CSUB, second baseman/designated player Taylor DeSilva (So., Sunnyvale,
Calif., Univ. of the Pacific) hit another single to move King to second and then
King scored the 'Runners lone run on an RBI single by shortstop Myshayla Fryer
(So., San Diego Calif., University HS).
San Jose State was led
by Amanda Schatz and Alex Stange as each player had three RBIs in Game 1.
Annica Wolfe led the Spartans in Game 2 with a two-run homer in the first ining
and Markesha Collins added a solo homer in the fourth inning.
CSUB will return to
action March 2-4 at the University of New Mexico Invitational in Albuquerque,
