BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Evan Vizcarra (So., Penngrove,
Calif., Petaluma HS) won three events and Chris Pipes (Sr., Fresno, Calif.,
Merced College) added two first-place finishes to lead the CSU Bakersfield
men's swimming and diving team to a 174-111 victory over Cal Baptist on
Saturday at the Hillman Aquatics Center. The Roadrunners won 12 of 16 events on
senior day, which was also the final home meet and final regular season dual of
the season for CSUB.
Vizcarra took first place in the 500-yard freestyle with a
time of 4 minutes, 40.39 seconds, won the 1,000 free with a time of 9:32.78 and
took the 200 butterfly with a 1:55.57 mark. Pipes flashed his sprinting speed
to place first in the 50 free (20.90) and 100 free (45.94). Pipes was also on
CSUB's winning 400 medley relay squad that posted a 3:26.76 with Peter Bardessono (Sr., Elverta, Calif., American River College), Brian Martinez (Fr.,
Las Vegas, Nev., Arbor View HS) and Dan Wickensheimer (Jr., Fort Wayne,
Ind., Bakersfield Stockdale HS).
Also picking up wins for CSUB were Alex Daneke (Jr., Lodi,
Calif., UC Davis) in the 200 free (1:43.38), Garrett Hubbard (So., Granada
Hills, Calif., Bishop Alemany) in the 200 backstroke (1:54.30), Martinez in the
100 breaststroke (59.13), Jake Priest (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev., Palo Verdes HS)
and diver Troy Neklason (Fr., Seattle, Wash., Aviation HS) in the 3-meter
competition with 251.30 points.
"The men swam out of their minds," said CSUB head swimming
coach Chris Hansen. "Chris Pipes got a lot of points. Evan Vizcarra had an
amazing meet today. He struggled a bit this year and came out in the end better
than he was at this time last year."
It was the final meet at the Hillman Aquatics Center for
CSUB seniors Pipes, Bardessono, Vance Elmore (Bakersfield, Calif., University
of Hawaii) and Bobby Klagge (Granite Bay, Calif., Granite Bay HS) and the day
ended with an emotional tribute to the departing seniors.
"It was bittersweet day. It is a rough class to see go,"
Hansen said. "It is never easy. They are a good bunch of kids. As for the rest of this season, we have two
weeks until our conference championship and we showed we are on track."
The Roadrunners will now begin preparing for the Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation championships Feb. 15-18. The MPSF diving
championships will be held in Colorado Springs, Colo., while the swimming
championships will take place at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park,
Calif.
