BAKERSFIELD,
Calif-No. 16 UCLA scored three
goals in a span of 3:03 in the first half as the Bruins defeated CSU
Bakersfield 4-1 in a women's soccer exhibition Saturday night at CSUB's Main
Soccer Field.
The Roadrunners opened the scoring at the 7:01 mark when Sam
Pena (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif.
(Bakersfield HS) took a cross from the outside box on the right side from
freshman Emily Noethe (Fr., Dallas,
Ga., East Paulding HS).
Sydney Leroux tied the match for UCLA at 35:24. A little
over a minute later, Leroux scored again for a 2-1 Bruins' advantage. Kylie
McCarthy capped off the spurt with a goal at 38:27. Courtney Proctor added a goal in the 61st
minute for the final tally of the match.
"I think the first 30 minutes we had the run of play and
CSUB was the better team on the field," said CSUB Head Coach Melissa Phillips.
"But there was a 10 minute period in the first half when we had a few lapses.
When you lapse on a team like this, in 10 minutes, they are going to score
goals on you."
A crowd of 684, the largest to see a women's soccer match at
CSUB since the transition for the Roadrunners to Division I , were in
attendance.
"I saw a lot of good things attacking wise," Phillips
said. "Now its about fine tuning our
runs and start to attack the ball and win some games."
The Roadrunners open the 2011 regular season next Sunday at New Mexico. The kickoff
is set for 12 p.m. (PDT).
