BAKERSFIELD,
Calif.-In the season finale for both teams, CSU Bakersfield (33-22) defeated Cal Poly (27-26) May 29
at Hardt Field.
Cael Brockmeyer (Fr., Vineyard Haven, Mass.,
Avon Old Farms HS ) got the Roadrunners on the board with two outs in the
bottom of the sixth when he doubled home DC Legg (Jr., Murrietta,
Calif., Cypress College).
Martin Medina's (Jr., Ventura, Calif.,
St. Bonaventure HS) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh scored Tyler
Shryock (Fr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) and 2-0 CSUB advantage. The Roadrunners added a insurance run in the
eighth.
The Mustangs put the first two batters of the ninth at first
and second to chase CSUB starter Mike McCarthy (R-Sr., Brentwood,
Calif., Univ. of Redlands. With Mitch Haniger at the plate, Medina, the Roadrunners'
closer, got Cal Poly's leading home run hitter to fly out to left center. Matt
Jensen recorded a sacrifice fly to score DJ Gentile. Elliott Stewart singled
left to put the tying run on at first. Matt Russell struck out to end the game.
McCarthy and Medina
combined on a six hitter with the duo posted nine strikeouts. Kevin Younger
(So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) went 3-for-4 with an RBI
while Brockmeyer was 2-for-4. Evan Busby had two Cal Poly's six hits.
CSUB was not awarded an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament when the field was announced May 30.
NOTE-CSUB pitcher Nick Shannon, one of the two Roadrunner
seniors, proposed to his girlfriend, Samantha Lozano during the pregame Senior
Day ceremony. Lozano said yes. McCarthy started three times in the final week of the season, winning twice. McCarthy threw 345 pitches in those three starts.
