BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-Oscar Sanay (Fr., Chula Vista, Calif.,
Bonita Vista HS) went 4-for-5 two RBI's as CSUB (32-22) defeated Cal Poly 10-3
May 28 at Hardt Field. Sanay's four hits marked the 18th multi-hit game (and
fourth time with four hits) this for season for the Roadrunners' second
baseman.
Cal Poly opened the scoring on the night when Mitch
Haniger's sacrifice fly scored DJ Gentile in the top of the fourth. Taking
advantage of a two-out error in the bottom of the fourth, Cael Brockmeyer (Fr.,
Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) tied the game with an RBI double to
right center to plate Andrew Letourneau (Jr., Bakersfield,
Calif., Bakersfield College).
Cal Poly went ahead again in the fifth. With one out, Denver Chavez's safety
squeeze was misplayed by CSUB pitcher Jonathan Montoya (Jr., Chino Hills, Calif.,
Chino Hills HS). Montoya's throw home was high, allowing Elliot Stewart, who
opened the frame with a double, to score. The Mustangs loaded the bases with
two outs, but JJ Thompson ground out to third to end the inning.
Cal Poly made it 3-1 in the sixth when Jimmy Allen's safety
squeeze scored Haniger. Kevin Younger (So., Bakersfield, Calif.,
Liberty HS) tied the score in the bottom of the sixth with a triple that scored
Sanay and Letourneau.
Sanay put the Roadrunners into the lead for the first time
on the night with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. Jeremy Rodriguez
(Jr., Thousand Oaks, Calif., Crespi HS) was hit by a pitch with
the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth for a 5-3 CSUB advantage. Martin
Medina (Jr., Ventura, Calif., St. Bonaventure HS) cleared the
bases with his first triple of the year and a five-run Roadrunner lead. Sanay's
single scored Medina
for a 9-3 CSUB lead. Brockmeyer got the Roadrunners into double digits with a
double that drove in Sanay.
Montoya and Medina
combined on a six-hitter. Montoya
improved to 8-5 on the year. Medina
earned his seventh save of the year as he entered the game with CSUB leading
4-3 in the eighth. Medina
struck out three of the six batters he faced. In addition to Sanay, five other
CSUB hitters each had two hits for the Roadrunners who out slugged the Mustangs
17-6.
The final game of the 2011 regular season for both teams is
Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
