BAKERSFIELD, Calif.---Tommy Hoenshell (Jr., Orange
County, Calif., Cypress College)
tossed his fourth complete game of the year, a five-hitter, as CSU Bakersfield
(31-22) defeated Cal Poly (28-23) 3-1 Friday night at Hardt Field. The 6-6
righty struck out five, walked two, and posted 78 strikes in 126 pitches. It was Hoenshell's second consecutive complete-game five-hitter as he posted the feat May 21 against then No. 19 Fresno State.
The Roadrunners scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the
first. Ryan McIntyre (Jr., Henderson,
Nev., Cornado HS) came all the
way home from second when Evan Busby dropped a double play ball. DC Legg's
(Jr., Murrietta, Calif.,
Cypress College)
singled in Martin Medina (Jr., Ventura,
Calif., St. Bonaventure HS) later
in the frame.
Cal Poly scored for the first time in the fifth when Mitch
Haniger's sacrifice fly plated Busby. Andrew Letourneau (Jr., Bakersfield,
Calif., Bakersfield College)
returned a two-run advantage to the Roadrunners with a two-out RBI single in
the bottom of the fifth.
The Roadrunners were limited to five hits (by five different
CSUB hitters) by Cal Poly pitchers Mason Radeke and Jeff Johnson. Medina scored two runs.
The Mustangs' DJ Gentile was 2-for-3.
